News broke a while back that the Weinstein brothers had gotten their grubby hands on the rights to remake the John Landis classic, An American Werewolf in London. Nothing else was announced in regards to the project for a fair amount of time and most fans of the original hoped it might have been shelved. Silly us. It’s now being reported that Fernley Phillips, writer of the ill conceived The Number 23, has been hired to work on a script.

It was already poorly remade once in the form of An American Werewolf in Paris and if 23 is any indication of what Phillips can do, then fans have absolutely nothing to look forward to. When one stops to consider it, why would they even need to acquire the rights? The simplistic plot isn’t what makes the original so great. The direction of John Landis and his genre-fusing sensibilities is what made the film wonderful. For every scary or suspenseful moment, there was an equally funny and witty one.

Do the Weinsteins honestly think that fans of the original would be stoked enough on this idea of a remake to rush out and see it when it’s done? It seems that for every vampire idea floating around, a werewolf one isn’t too far behind. So why not look a little bit harder for an original idea since it’s obviously an attempt to cash in on the current werewolf craze. This is just another example of why this world would have been a better place had Stephanie Meyer not been born.
