'Daybreakers' Trailer

I’ll say it if no one else will.  Vampire films have become stale and boring.  The cliché stories and plot elements prove to be the same old trite one after another.  From this we have recently been given a host of new and unique takes on vampire films in order to try to breathe new un-life into the genre.

Some have been of great acclaim such as 30 Days of Night, and others have faltered like Ultraviolet.  As a side note I personally loved Ultraviolet.  Seeking to be another new and original entry into the Vampire film genre is Daybreakers.  This film comes to us from Michael and Peter Spiereg.  You may recognize them as the minds behind the indie zombie flick Undead, which was a fun romp through the zombie genre.

Daybreakers takes place in a world where a plague has turned the majority of the population into vampires.  With mankind dwindling, the vampires are running out of blood and are seeking a way to fix the issue.  A lonee researcher bands together with a covert group of hunters in order to try and find a cure for vampirism and perhaps solve both the issues at once.  The question that falls is if the vampire race will welcome this change or fight it tooth and nail.

The film cast is made up of stunning performers including Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neil, and a number of well known Australian actors and actresses.

While I like the sophisticated vampires more than “I’m too sexy for my shirt” vamps, I still long for the days when Vampires were monsters first and foremost.  Another recommended Vampire film is Perfect Creature, which is a steampunk vampire dominant society film.  Also I highly recommend David Wellington’s Vampire book series that starts with 13 Bullets.

Sound off B! K! readers: Any vamp films you suggest? What do you want more of/less of in this genre?

Daybreakers looks great. I'm usually not a fan of Vampire flicks, but this seems pretty original. I did love 30 Days of Night recently, but as far as recommendations go, I don't have many. I mean Gary Oldman was worth the Francis Ford Copolla Dracula, but it was by no means a good movie. From Dusk Till Dawn was great, one of Rodriguez's best. Those are probably the best ones I can think of.

"Let the Right One In" is the single best vampire movie of the past decade. I'd also suggest the Russian vampire trilogy that started off with Nightwatch and continued with Daywatch (the third film hasn't been made yet). But "Let the Right One In" is an absolute brilliant vampire story. And the book is pretty good too! That pool scene...

I agree "Let the Right One In" is so great... however, I stick to my guns and say that (while not being the best vamp film) the creatures themselves were best brought to the screen in 30 Days of Night! I also suggest Near Dark for a great vampire flick. Nightwatch was fucking brilliant (the books are better), but Daywatch really let me down.

Ultraviolet was masterful. Loved the colour, great comic book movie. Don't believe i've seen Let the Right One In. Terrible movie but I liked John Carpenters Vampires, liked the vampire hunter thing and the head vampire was done well(when he wasnt speaking)...

Good trailer, I might be excited if I didn't hate Ethan Hawke so much...

Let the right one in was fantastic as was 30 days of night. True Blood is also covering some new ground. Yes some of the Vamps are wimps but others are out of their blood sucking minds.
