'X-Men' Returns To The Small Screen

By Henok Kidane on 04.29.2009

First they brought G.I. Joe back to the small screen with “G.I. Joe: Resolute”. Then there were announcments that the first season of “Voltron” would be available for viewing on Hulu. Now, Marvel.com has thrown its hat into the nostalgia ring, with news that the site will be streaming episodes of early 90’s cartoon classic “X-Men: The Animated Series” every Tuesday.

This is fantastic news; I see my younger cousins watch some of the cartoons today, and I just shake my head. Talking sponges? Freakishly large-headed kid geniuses? At its peak, the only cartoon that was on par with “X-Men” was “Batman: The Animated Series”, and it’s about time kids these days were exposed to cartoons that concern themselves more with creating astoryline laden with excellent plot and writing, rather than ones that focus only on following the “Pokemon” formula as closely as possible.

Check out this Apocalypse quote for instance:

“The old world passes away. Together, we shall forge a new one, in fire and blood. The future is transformed, I am the instrument to purify the world! The evil of human and mutant must be cut away! You shall help me tear down the old order. Those who oppose me shall perish through my agents of destruction. Famine! Pestilence! War! And my greatest creation, Death, the winged angel. From the ashes of this world, I will build a better one! Go forth my horsemen! And let the chaos cleanse the world!

And Angel’s response later in the episode when he’s free of Apocalypse’s control?

“I’ll follow him to the ends of the earth, through perdition’s
fire, until he breathes blood and rolls over, split, broken,
FINISHED!!!”

YES. This is the type of shit I’m talking about when I tell people that cartoons aren’t just for kids. So far, only the first episode, “Night of the Mutants Pt. 1” is available (remember that one? The X-Men go to a mall to meet/save Jubilee from Sentinels, and Morph dies…), but I’m sure that as more people check it out, Marvel will make more episodes
available, so GO WATCH IT.
