CAPTAIN AMERICA Movie Prep

By Brian Kronner on 02.01.2010

Director Joe Johnston gave the following to Film Journal in a WOLF MAN intervew.

"We’re in prep, Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we’re set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It’s the part of the process that I love the most. We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we could do this?’ It’s that
phase of the production where money doesn’t matter: ‘Let’s put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.’" The film, he says at this early stage, will begin "in 1942, 1943" during World War II. "The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we’re sort of avoiding. We’re going back to the ’40s, and then forward to what they’re doing
with Captain America now."

captain america

I like the sound of that. I can’t wait for the WWII stuff. It seems like MARVEL is doing things right here.

I want to see Cap and Red Skull in full on WWII mode. I don't want him thawed until the Avengers movie personally. I wanted a full WWII epic. Ah well, I'm excited none the less.

The Captains origin story is mediocre at best. They should be able to handle it pretty good. As long as they don't do some shitty world war breeze through they did with that catastrophe known as wolverine. It is what they do after they thaw him that really counts.

Woah now Toni. the cap I know, while he does like to beat some Nazi ass...he would drop his government orders like a sack of flags if it meant saving the life of a friend... say Bucky, for instance? It wouldnt be the first time he went AWOL to stand up for what he believes in (The Captain and Nomad storylines), so i would have to reserve judgement to see the reason behind the desertion or whatever you wanna call it

What really pissed me off is that I hear a plot point is going to be Cap seeking acceptance and feeling isolated, another one, and this one really gets my blood boiling: the climax is to involve Cap going AWOL to help a friend. Captain America, going AWOL, this is the greatest bastardisation of the character possible. Cap wouldn't miss getting to beat up Nazi's for his own wedding, or the birth of his first child, bad call, bad call.

Maybe the watered down, don' upset the people of a common wealth comics they send you there in Canadia, but here in 'Mericuh Cap wouldn't miss fighting the Krauts even for the wettest of poon. Granted, Cap went AWOL a few times in the 80's, but that was because he didn't want to blow up some poor Sandinista for a vested Corporate interest. 40's Cap, where the movie is supposed to take place, going AWOL would be a fucking abortion.

I dunno I'm always skeptical of lines such as: "‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we could do this?’" The most famous last words to any decent idea.

Ok Toni, thinking of '40s cap i am inclined to agree with you... but I will say that at any time period, Cap would find a way to help a friend and complete his mission...cuz thats how he rolls

They better make Red skull look cool. I don't want bad CG or crappy make up. I'd prefer they take a note from The Dark Knight and make a Red skull that wasn't really a Skull Head. Make it Hitler in a ski-Mask with a big read skull Stitched to it. Something more plausible than the Comic.

Remember, the director is straight off of Wolfman ... which has been in production HELL for like 4 years now.

http://www.itsonlyamovie.co.uk/hellraiser.htm -Monster Frank /"Red Skull" just more wet and sloppy than it should be

blah, god no... Cg isnt the way, Im thinking..like... Hellraiser style, you know what i mean? Frank the monster during his "rejuvenation"... a little more gross and gory then should be used, but it can be done to look menacing and real, something that can be plausible to the viewers, to use your statement

Well ... you want a shitty looking CG Skull head like seen in Ghost Rider? I hope the fuck not.

Red Skull shouldn't be hard to do. A standard black SS dress uniform, with dress saber, sash, and armband, along with a prosthetic Red Skull mask. Remember, for much of the character's history, he wore a mask, especially in WW2. The climax can give him an actual deformity. They can even go the GI Joe Destro route, making his SS Totenkopf insignia red, but otherwise being a normal SS Officer, then, at the climax, giving him his skull.

Well, I don't think that Marvel/Disney are going to let that happen. I do agree that would work. But like I said ... remember the directory just came off of a CG heavy project. You're probably going to end up with a CG Red Skull ... unless Marvel/Disney are too pussy to put Red Skull/Hitler in the movie at all.

As for Cap, I'd love basically getting his Ultimate WW2 costume with his mask from Ultimates 2 and his round shield. And I agree with Toni: Captain America would not abandon the welfare of his men, abandoning them in combat, for personal reasons. He'd find a way to do both.

Fuck alllll of that :) Just have red skull, be a fuckin burn victim so he has no hair, is incredibly scarred and his skin is reddish and have his eyelids fucked up.

Alright kids, here's what needs to happen. I'm down with Fist's idea pertaining to the shield, but I'm sick of CG. Some good old fashion makeup work and facial prosthetics could give us what we need from Red Skull. Ala LOTR Orcs or the monsters in BUFFY

Seriously, a red halloween mask? Is that really what you want? Too Cheesy. This is going to be another FF flick isn't it.?

The Cap. Should be wearing his vintage Uniform and have the "First Appearance" Shield. Tony should give him the new "Round" shield at the beginning of "The Avengers" movie.

Think of Dark Knight Two-Face. Same idea should apply to the Red Skull, I honestly puked in my mouth a bit when I read the ski mask idea.

Fair enough guys. I just kept seeing the mask that Punisher wore in the Punisher: Noir comics and thought it with a red skull instead of a white one could be cool and make it look more plausible instead of super hokey. Two Face in the Dark Knight looks too hokey to me. And most of that is CG, not make up. But I'm down for make up and prosthetics as long as they are done well and not too fake looking.

i just remember that scene in the cartoon where he's hanging with the screaming eagles before they jump, and that dood starts talking shit "wheres he at now!?" then cap flies that god damn plane into some scumbags. if they do something like that in this movie i will watch it 4000 times.

After the watered-down GIJoe I hope they can keep some patriotism in this flick. Gotta get that international market though.
