It’s being reported that Cillian Murphy is nearly finished with negotiations to star in I’m.mortal – director Andrew Niccol’s return to sci-fi. Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake (who is still in negotiations) will also be joining him on the project that is set to begin filming in late September.

The story takes place in the near future, in a world where the gene for aging has been switched off. Time has become the currency for which people barter because of the threat of overpopulation. The rich live forever and everyone else is left to negotiate their immortality. When impoverished man Will (Timberlake) is bestowed a fortune, he becomes the target of a murder investigation and kidnaps an heiress (Seyfried) while on the run. Murphy will play a pursuing officer from an organization known as the Timekeepers.

The premise sounds interesting enough. Niccol is an adept director in the genre, giving us Gattaca more than a decade ago. Murphy is solid in everything he does (especially his tranny films!) and Seyfried is decent too. The only person that’s questionable is Timberlake. He’s just fine and dandy for SNL skits and forgettable roles in mediocre films but I’m not sold on him being the leading man. He does have a bevy of other projects lined up though, including the respectable-looking Social Network, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
