Hugo Weaving: Red Skull?

By Toni Smith on 03.12.2010

FilmDrunk is reporting that Hugo Weaving of “Matrix” and “The Adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert” fame is a near lock for Captain America’s arch nemesis the Red Skull.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:
Marvel Studios has zeroed in on Hugo Weaving to play the villainous Red Skull in “Captain America.”  In the Marvel comics, Red Skull has been Captain America’s archenemy since 1941, when he engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler’s right-hand man. In his final battle with the superhero, he was buried under the rubble of a bombed building but — as would occur later with Captain America — fell into a state of suspended animation. Both were revived in modern times.

So, we got that going for us, which is nice. Weaving is an excellent actor who can look creepy as all get out when needed; although for this movie he’ll have to be more like “V” and carry all of his gravitas in his voice and mannerisms considering he’ll have little actual face time.

Red SkullHugo

What I’d like to see them do is have The Red Skull be the very first Super-Soldier that Dr. Erskine creates before he emigrates to the US. Being a flawed prototype, it is an easy explanation to why the Skull was disfigured. In the US, Erskine would create a final Super-Soldier in the form of Steve Rogers, who would be the public display; all the while having an African American Super-Soldier doing all of the dirty work, and that Soldier boys and girls ought to be named Nick Fury.

Now if only they could find the proper Captain America . . .

It would probably be bad to do back to back Nazi roles as a German actor, he'd end up being typecast, In a few years Waltz could do a great Baron Von Strucker.

I agree, Weaving is awesome and I have a feeling he'll do a wicked job of the Skull.

Well i definitely think Hugo could make a good Red Skull, its almost to easy to see which roles weaving is gonna excel at, because they are all the same role, but hes good at what he does

How's Weaving's german accent? I could almost see Christoph Waltz (Col. Hans Landa - Inglorious Basterds) pulling off a great Red Skull, that guy is awesome

BOOM! wow mr. smith, good call on Strucker, shave him and give him a monocle and there he is. Maybe in a Fury movie or something? That would be badass, Waltz vs. Jackson. But i agree, back to back nazi movies cant be good

I was thinking HYDRA should be a greater presence in the Avengers movie, you have them gather a ton of baddies and have them duke it out with the Avengers like in Ultimates 2.

I think this is a step in a positive direction. But I'm like yaguara and nervous about this film. Especially, after seeing Wolfman. I'm afraid of too much CG and action ... not enough substance. I want a good amount of well done action, sure, of course I do! But I want a plot and character developement that I can sink my teeth into. I want to walk out of the theater feeling more patriotic than when I go in.

Hugo does a pretty good villian. I am mildly comforted by this news. I am still really nervous about this movie. I just have this nagging feeling that it is going to blow just like all the previous incarnations of Capt America that made it to film.
