Kevin Feige on Marvel Studio's Upcoming Projects

By Brian Kronner on 01.28.2010

Feige talked to SFX Magazine for their March issue about how Iron Man, Iron Man 2 (May 7), Thor (May 6, 2011) and The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22, 2011) will lay the foundation for what should be the ultimate superhero epic - The Avengers (May 4, 2012).

"It’s fun now, and we’re introducing some new characters in [’Iron Man 2’], but it’s not about just cramming in lots of new people; that’s sort of the cardinal sin of the sequel - adding in too many characters. This is totally Tony Stark’s story. And that’s gonna weave into Thor’s story, and Steve Rogers’ story, and it’s already ingrained with Nick Fury’s story and an organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D."

"My only concern is that when we launch a franchise–whichever character’s franchise that may be–it should stand on its own two feet… So by the time ‘The Avengers’ comes in 2012, it’s not just a team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers. It’s three people - four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury - who you’ve seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time."

Hulksayswhat?

Feige on possibility of a second Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton:
"That would be post-’Avengers,’ if it happened… I think there’s a chance. It’s certainly our intention to use the same actors from film to film where we can."

Will it would be difficult to meld the fantasy of Thor with the high-tech sci-fi in Iron Man and The Avengers?
"No, because we’re doing the Jack Kirby/Stan Lee/Walt Simonson/J. Michael Straczynski ‘Thor.’ We’re not doing the blow-the-dust-off-of-the-old-Norse-book-in-your-library ‘Thor.’ And in the ‘Thor’ of the Marvel Universe, there’s a race called the Asgardians. And we’re linked through this Tree of Life that we’re unaware of. It’s real science, but we don’t know about it yet. The ‘Thor’ movie is about teaching people that."

Feige was then asked what other characters may come to the big screen after The Avengers…
"I love Doctor Strange. Ant-Man is like Whiplash - one of those characters where you’re like, ‘Really?’ that we’ve got a fun story with. I’ve always wanted to do something with Black Panther. I think what Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction have done with Iron Fist lately is great, and the Iron Fist mythology opens up a whole other part to us. I’d love to break into the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe even more- it’s kind of there in ‘Thor.’ J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ got me jonesing to do that. It’s what I grew up on - ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Wars.’ I want to do a big space epic. And we’ve got them in Marvel."

marvel movies

So Dr. Strange, Black Panther, and Iron Fist huh? Meh. I’d watch them, but not super excited for any of them. Can we do Silver Surfer or does FOX own that too? Anyhow, I think this puts the will he/won’t he Hulk question to bed. We’re getting some more Hulk, I’m really excited about that. Booyah.

iron fist? oh sweet jesus, please? i would rather have all three of the above. well over the the crapfest that came out, the x-men/hulk films were a waste of time. imagine the badass martial arts action you could have in an ironfist/black panther film. and dr.strange is just so damn cool.

Yea id like to see Wright's Ant-man, that would be sweet. but I would love to see Iron Fist even more. There are already talks of Luce cage making it to the big screen so lets see some Heroes For Hire, team em up... Go read Ed Brubaker/Matt Fraction & David Aja's Immortal iron Fist and then tell me you dont want an Iron Fist movie... put it under the marvel knights imprint (Punisher:Warzone was produced under it) and we're golden

i'm torn, i've thought about it for like 15 minutes and everything i stop to think about "if i was going to make a movie, out of the three in discussion which would i make" i always come up with dr.strange. i don't watch that cartoon shit but i watched the dr.strange movie and i loved it. i'd love to see something like that, and all the cool shit you could do, fucking pull a dragon out of a hat because its magic and it still makes sense.

I agree with Ranger6! Reboot me a goddamned DareDevil flick! I'd like to see a cool Dr. Strange film and why not do that Submariner picture that they've talked about in the past? James Cameron could make a great Submariner film (not that he would) ... but he could. Wait, why not give Neill Blomkamp that one? Shit ... give him Dr. Strange! And have John Woo direct the new DareDevil.

Keep John Woo away! Guy is turrible. And didn't FOX announce intentions to reboot DD a while ago?

Norman you don't like John Woo? Have you seen Hard Boiled or The Killer? Great stuff! ...And yes, they did ... but, nothing has come of it.

Yes, I've both of those. HARD BOILED is fucking sweet. HOWEVER - All of Woo's American movies suck. FACE/OFF is ok, but MI:2 was terrible and I don't need to see Daredevil standing up on a motorcycle and flipping though some Doves.

But that's what DareDevil does best ... balance and flip. I too think MI:2 was terrible (not as bad as 3 though). I don't like Face/Off. But Hard Target and Broken Arrow are pretty f'n sweet, or am I just too blinded to think straight about those films?

Dr. Kronner
It's egregious enough to imply that either HARD TARGET or BROKEN ARROW are better than FACE/OFF, but to flat out state that MI:2 is better than MI:3? That is unforgivable. MI:3 was EASILY the best of the trilogy. Fist, you my boy and all, but between this and the "F-Ron' stuff, I kinda want to projectile vomit on you.

Oh and I would love to see a Black Panther or IronFist movie when it came out but I would be totally blown away by a good Dr. Strange movie. Imagine a Doc Strange movie with the sort of visual impact we saw in Cameron's Avatar combined with a really good Sorcerer Supreme story!

I agree that Woo lost something when he came over to big budget Hollyweird. Give me old "No Insurance" Hong Kong Woo any day.

Bring on the Vomit Doc ... Really? You like Face/Off with nic cage and john travolta better than Van Damage and Christian Slater? hmmm ... HARD TARGET IS THE SHIT!

2010-02-02 18:02:37
Dr. Kronner
Don't get me wrong, I own HARD TARGET, but it's terrible. Where as FACE/OFF ending the streak of the most watchable Cage movies ever.(LEAVING LAS VEGAS, THE ROCK, CON AIR, FACE/OFF) But Van Dammit's mullet is too distracting to take serious. Though Wilford was badass...

Van Damage Rocks The Mullet better than Kenny Fuckin' Powers! ...and that's sayin' somethin'!

as for cage man he kills me, like, he's so awful for action movies but all around he aint a bad actor and all. like i liked him in the national treasure movies, and i was like, he would make a cool indy ya'know wadimeen? but what sealed the deal for me was him takin that remake of one of my favorite movies bangkok dangerous and stinkin up the place'n shit.
