Samuel L. Jackson is Writing a Comic Book, starring Sam Jackson!

By Toni Smith on 01.28.2010

Samuel L. Jackson, greatest human that isn’t Clint Eastwood, is co-writing a comic for Boom! Studios with Eric Calderon, whom if you didn’t know already, thus losing my respect, is one of the writers of the greatest anime of all time: Afro Samurai. Not only that, But Jackson’s likeness will be used for the protagonist of the book.

Most celebrity comics are shit, but Sam Jackson is so awesome that he could probably fuck your mother, take Polaroid’s of the act and then give them to you, and you’d ask him to autograph them so you can place them in the frame that once held you child’s first photo. Here’s the rundown of the book “Cold Space,” according to Robot
6:

COLD SPACE #1
(W) Samuel L. Jackson, Eric Calderon (A) Jeremy Rock

From legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson and Emmy nominated writer/producer Eric Calderon, the team that brought you the Emmy-award-winning, best-selling Afro Samurai, comes their next original series — Cold Space! When an on-the-run outlaw crash-lands on a hostile planet on the brink of civil war, he finds himself caught in the crossfire between two warring factions. But in chaos lies
opportunity… because where there’s war, there’s money to be made! A hard-boiled sci-fi action-adventure with covers by Eisner Award-winning artist Dave Johnson and Irredeemable cover artist, Jeffrey Spokes!
32pgs, FC $3.99

Bad. Ass. Jackson had nothing to do with “The Ultimates” but Millar and Hitch used his likeness for Nick Fury because they thought he was the coolest man alive, just like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby did when they first made Nick Fury and modeled him after Dean Martin. Jackson was only involved in “The Ultimates” in likeness only, which he enthusiastically gave permission to do so, and “The Ultimates” was one of the most awesome books ever made, so awesome in fact that Nick Fury has become synonymous with Jackson. Don’t believe me, watch “Wolverine and the X-Men,” does Fury look more like Martin or Jackson?

Jackson will be blowing your mind later this year, be grateful Polaroid will soon be out of business.

Let me play devil's advocate here for just a moment. SJ is basically writing himself into a comic book - how is that different from the goofball vanity press stuff that floats around on the web? If he uses the likeness of other people for the character's romantic interest does that make it Slash fiction? Does this open the door for even more absurd scenarios? Maybe Jerry Seinfeld wants to write himself as the next Batman sidekick?

In the 90's Sam Jackson was among the King of Badasses. The last 10 years however, I'm less impressed. Forget the cameos as Nick Fury, or his involvement in the STAR WARS prequels, but the movies where he is the focal point have mostly sucked. I love SNAKES ON A PLANE and BLACK SNAKE MOAN was good, but Jackson has done a lot of shit lately...
