10 Choices for the New Captain America!

By BK Staff on 09.11.2008

With the seemingly inevitable advent of the Captain America movie, we thought it would be a good idea to take a stab at likely actors who could take up the mantle of Steve Rogers, Marvel's most patriotic hero of them all. Knowing what Steve Rogers looks like in and out of uniform, along with the boyscout attitude and no-nonsense sense of morality, the actor that takes on this role would have to be able to flex his acting chops, make the character spring off the page and come across as American as apple pie.

Now, with that being said, let me quickly throw in an opinion about that Will Smith as Captain America rumor: On the one hand, Will Smith has become a go to guy for movies about saving the world, and Marvel DID write that series, Truth, in which Steve Rogers was revealed to be the second Captain America, so if Marvel decided to go that route, Will Smith would actually be a perfect fit. However, I'm sure we're going with the traditional storyline, so, without further ado…

Let's see how these ten actors stack up:

10. Brad Pitt

Ten years ago, Brad Pitt would've been the ideal choice for Cap, as the blond haired blue-eyed star was the epitome of American success and good looks. Now, however, he's put on a few years and though he'd probably still kick the average joe's ass, he's not the physical specimen he used to be. You hear that Angelina?!? You need a young dude, like ME!!!!! Uh oh…Brad Pitt's standing…right…behind me…isn't he? Crap.

9. Josh Holloway

Josh is slowly but surely becoming a common face in every household due to his exposure on the show Lost. Everyone's initial thought when we all got a feel for his character was that he would make for a great Gambit. However, since he doesn't want to be type-cast as a southern guy outside of the show Lost, why not cast him as the good ol' patriotic Steve Rogers? It would be a significant departure from Sawyer, yes, but I bet he would be pretty convincing at helping fight the Nazis and preserving the American way.

8. Matt Damon

The star of the Bourne trilogy of movies has the facial structure for the role of Captain America, and has proven himself quite the physical actor as well. The main issue for him, however, is the height issue, as Steve Rogers is described in the comics as being in the neighborhood of 6'2. Still, they can do wonders with camera tricks and CG…look what they did with Tom Cruise.

7. Thomas Jane

Thomas Jane owes us an apology for that mess that was The Punisher and Marvel owes him an apology for making it. One way to do that is to give him another shot at the superhero genre by letting him take a stab at the Cap. He's definitely got the size and rugged look, but can he flex his acting muscle enough to make us believe?

6. Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds is somewhat underrated in the action genre, but showed his skills in Smokin' Aces and Blade: Trinity. Surprisingly, dude is pretty freakin' huge, and with the right script he could make a tough act to follow. Plus, he's been near Jessica Biel, and that ups his cool points by like 50.Oh yeah, and there's that whole "playing Deadpool in the new X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie" thing too.

5. Daniel Craig

Anyone who's seen the new Bond movies knows just how hardcore this guy can be. Can you imagine a scene of Captain America kicking, punching, and breaking arms through an army of Nazis? You could if Craig was playing the role. Seriously, that's a Captain America I could respect and fear…but can he do an American accent?

4. Alex Skarsgaard

Here's one you might not recognize right off, but when you see him you could totally see how he'd fit the role. He's been in an HBO series called Generation Kill, and one look at him says "America! Fuck yeah!" He's already used to playing the honorable and heroic soldier. Add about 40 lbs. of muscle and you've got a tailor made Cap.

3. Jason Lewis

This square jawed badass was most recently in Sex and the City the movie, but we'll try really hard to ignore that as he's got an almost perfect look for Captain America. As long as he can resist dragging "Samantha" through war torn WWII to do battle with the Red Skull, we'll be happy with the result. Shit…did I just admit I know one of the character's names from Sex and the City? I…uh…found it in my research… yeah, that's the ticket.

2. Chris Pine

He automatically gets cool points for playing the role of the coolest Captain of the future, James Tiberius Kirk in the upcoming J.J.Abrams' Star Trek. Additionally, he's shown off his action skills in Smokin' Aces. Rumor has it that he's a tremendous douche though, so let's hope that his acting skills can make up for that…

1. Aaron Eckhart

Finally on our list, Aaron Eckhart. If you saw The Dark Knight, you know he can act his ass off. And, he's got the size, build, and look for the part. Since he's already taken on the role of hero turned villain, we'd love to see him doing the all American hero act and test his mettle as an action hero. Eckhart would be an absolute badass as Captain America.
