10 Superheroines Who Can't Naturally Blend in With Humans

By BK Staff on 09.12.2008

The stereotypical comic book heroine can usually blend in seamlessly with the rest of society.  Take away the skimpy superheroine outfit and the weapons, and you'd never know that the attractive lady sitting next to you on the subway can fly and move objects with her mind.  However, some superheroines don't look human at all and stick out like sore thumbs when integrated with "normal" society.  Here's a look at ten notable superheroines who just couldn't go unnoticed walking down the street.

1. Tigra

After a brief stint as The Cat, Greer Grant became Tigra and eventually joined up with the Avengers. Tigra is covered in stripes like a tiger and has a long cat's tail, as well. Ms. Grant is no dummy, either - she attended the University of Chicago before her transformation. You'd think that returning to college would be tough for Tigra in her present form, but I'm pretty sure some of the guys in my frat would have dated her. Heck, I dated a girl with stripes in college myself. But to be fair, they weren't tiger stripes – they were racing stripes. She had this thing about not wiping properly.

2. Shadow Lass

Shadow Lass is an alien from Talok VIII and part of the Legion of Super Heroes. With blue skin and pointy ears, Shadow Lass doesn't look like an ordinary woman. Plus, she has the power to project darkness, which can render her targets terrified and deprived of their senses. It's essentially like making someone watch a Uwe Boll movie.

3. Domino

Domino has the mutant ability to manipulate luck. She met Cable in the mercenary group Six-Pack before ultimately becoming a member of X-Force. Domino doesn't look freakish, but her milk-white skin and the black spot over her eye certainly aren't normal. My girlfriend also has a black eye, but it's not because of a mutation. She knows I don't like when my steak is overcooked. I'm kidding, I'm kidding – she fell down some stairs.

4. Namorita

Namorita is the cousin of the infamous Atlantean, Namor, the Sub-Mariner. As such, this cute little member of the New Warriors can breathe underwater and has super strength. She has pointy ears, just like her cousin and the rest of her race, so passing as a human is pretty tough. Although, have you seen some of those cosplay nerds that actually perform makeshift surgery on their ears to make them pointy like elves or Zelda or something? No thanks; dressing up as Boba Fett at Comic-Con is enough for me. I'm not a nerd, ya know.

5. Dawnstar

Dawnstar is an American Indian in the Legion of Super Heroes in the future. She comes from Starhaven, a planet colonized by Earth in the 23rd century and has the ability to track life forms and can survive unaided in deep space. Dawnstar's large feathered wings ensure that she could never blend in with humans. I know there's a casino on a reservation joke to be made here, but I'm going to take the high road and stick with the spousal abuse stuff.

6. Blink

A member of the Exiles and from another dimension (the Age of Apocalypse), Blink has the ability to generate teleportation portals, a power that comes in handy for fighting as well as for escape. Blink hardly looks human, as she has purple skin, pink hair, and green eyes with no pupils. She's pretty much what John Rocker was referring to when he commented on riding the 7 train to Shea Stadium.

7. Feral

Maria Callasantos is brown, furry, and has a prehensile tail. As Feral, she was a member of the Morlocks, living in the sewers, before joining up with the New Mutants, which became X-Force. Feral has enhanced speed, strength, and agility because of her mutation and isn't afraid to use her razor-sharp claws on an enemy. Out of all the superheroines on this list, Feral seems to be the one who would stick out the most in public. And yes, of course I'd still do her. What? You don't like Latin girls?

8. Mercury

Cessily Kincaid has a liquid metal body, red hair, and silver eyes with no pupils. She can morph her body into different shapes and stabbing weapons, and is pretty much a ripoff of a T-1000. Right? As Mercury, she became part of the Xavier Institute and one of the New X-Men in training. While she can't mimic the looks of other people (like a T-1000 or Mystique), she can significantly change and contort her body, making her very, very dateable. I'd gladly get mercury poisoning for one night with Ms. Kincaid. It can't be worse than the rash I have.

9. Persuasion

Kara Kilgrave is the daughter of The Purple Man, who used his mind-control powers to seduce Kara's mother into marrying him. Around puberty, Kara's body turned purple, rendering her a freak. The upside was, however, that Kara could control people via pheremones. Even better, people under Kara's control would temporarily turn purple. Kara used her powers of persuasion (hence the obvious monicker) as a member of Alpha and Beta Flight. I can relate to Kara, because I, too, have the power of persuasion. Lucky for me, though, GHB doesn't turn girl purple.

10. She-Dragon

Amy Belcher is one of the many freaks in Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon universe. Originally created as a parody of Marvel's She-Hulk, She-Dragon is large as shit and green as grass as a result of her father being hit with chemicals in Vietnam. Amy was a criminal but later joined the police department to use her size and strength for good. I've met Erik Larsen in the past, and he's a pretty nice dude. That said, he is AWKWARD. I'm not the most suave guy in the world, but standing next to Erik Larsen made me feel like Danny Zuko.
