A Basterd As A... Lizard?

Rumor has it Sony is interested in securing the star of Inglorious Basterds, Christoph Waltz, for the role of a villain in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot. If true, it’s assumed this courtship would be for the Lizard character that his Basterd co-star Michael Fassbender turned down in favor of playing Magneto in X-Men: First Class.

Waltz seems to have the face for what I’d imagine the Lizard would look like and is an immensely talented thespian. When Stephen Chow dropped out from The Green Hornet, I had lost interest in seeing it. Choosing Gondry as his replacement restored a little hope but getting Waltz to replace Nicolas Cage as the bad guy made it interesting again. He would be great as the Lizard.

With that being said, don’t hold your breath for this one. Yes, he’s already capitalized on the star-making Jew Hunter performance by landing work in more mainstream films with Gondry and Paul W.S. Anderson (The Three Musketeers). However, if it’s a paycheck he seeks then Marvel isn’t the company he wants to work for. Plus, I would think that he’d be sick of playing the villain by now. I wonder whom they turn to if Waltz says no too – maybe another Basterds actor? I know – Eli Roth! Not.

I am fine with this. If they use the Lizard, I hope they make the movie more of a horror film.

I was thinking just the other day that Spider-Man might possibly have the best rogues gallery in comics. I know, I know, Batman probably has the best rogues gallery, but Spider-Man has a ton of great bad guys to fight as well, and therefore tons of material for movies. Almost four movies in and no Vulture, Electro, Hobgoblin, Kingpin, Kraven, Mysterio, Shocker, Rhino, Black Cat...

Way to cover your tracks by mentioning batman. Especially considering your pic! I agree with u tho. That's probably one of the big reasons a reboot it not only plausible but exciting. I vote for carnage! Just avoid another douchey casting like topher grace.

Spider-Man and Batman are about equal, but for different reasons. Batman has the moody, creepy, serious crazies, Spidey has the visually fun and goofy characters. That being said, they both only have three that can carry a movie on their own. While Batman has Joker, Ra's and Two-Face, Spidey has GG, Doc Ock and (when he is done right, IE Ultimate) Venom. Carnage is a hunk of shit and one of the worst, most brainless villains of all time, and while I like the Lizard as a side character, I don't want him as the main villain.

If Marvel wants to do this right and build a trilogy, introduce Norman early and start building him up, maybe by having him fund multiple villains before going all Gobliny. Lizard cannot not carry a movie by himself, and Spider-Man is not a horror property. Torment is Todd McFarlane vomiting on paper.

And Topher Grace was a great casting. I've said for years he would of been the perfect Spider-Man. Venom is just an abortion of a character 90% of the time.

How can you say his casting was great and then say that the character he was playing is an abortion 90% of the time? If it was great casting that wouldn’t matter.

Grace was perfect for the Ultimate version of Venom, aka the 10% of Venom that doesn't suck. Venom sucked in Spider-Man 3 not because of Topher Grace, but because of the script and that, unless really knocked out of the ballpark, Venom tends to just suck. I will say I like Venom in Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers though, as basically a scenery chewing monster.
