ABC To Update The Greatest American Hero

Barry Sonnenfeld, the producer/director who brought us adaptations of The Addams Family, Men in Black and, er, Wild Wild West, is currently working on a update of the classic series The Greatest American Hero. Well, kind of.

Sonnenfeld is currently executive-producing a half-hour comedy series about "a harried mother who finds a special suit that gives her super powers" for ABC. Hmmm, sounds a little familiar to me.

He will be directing the pilot from a script by George Lopez writer Laura House.

What’s interesting is why ABC keeps giving Sonnenfeld shows, given that he’s had two series cancelled in two years.

I’m a bit torn on this one. One on hand, this is clearly a remake of The Greatest American Hero, but without credit given. And that’s all kinds of wrong. On the other, making the lead a woman isn’t neccessarily a bad thing, look at Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica. And on paper, Ben 10 is a simple rip-off of Dial H for Hero, but the show turned out to be amazing and an original take on an existing premise. Maybe, just maybe, this will do the same.

Probably going to be a canceled show. It will hit the ground walking. I think BK needs to put up some more hot geek girl galleries!!

I love that fact you used the Ben 10/Dial H example, I just used it the other day. Ben 10 is awesome. This show will not make it unless it has the one thing so many major network sci fi series seem to be missing...decent writers who can tell a story...seeing how it's Sonnenfeld (who really should not be in the industry period) I give it 4 episodes before the axe falls. Is it me or is ABC going through shows faster than whores go thru johns?

Even if it only lasts 4 episodes I'm THERE! This show was my 2nd favorite Live Action late night show while growing up. 2nd only to The Fall Guy with Lee Majors!

Aaaaactually... when Greatest American Hero was coming to a close, the creators pitched a spin off about a mother getting the suit. There was a pilot presentation reel produced and it's available on the Season 3 DVD. If this is the case.. this could be the longest gestation period from pilot produced to series pick-up in history! LOL>

I have to say that everyone involved in writing and posting this article totally dropped the ball by not making the sub headline "Believe it or Not...."
