Archie Movie Coming

By Brian Kronner on 09.23.2009

According to Variety:

“Archie Comics Publications has signed with CAA. The agency will seek to create branded entertainment opportunities in film and TV in much the way that it has for toymaker Mattel.

The 70-year-old Archie Comics owns such brands as Archie & Friends, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Cosmo the Merry Martian, Super Duck and Dotty and Ditto.

The Archie Comics pact comes as Hollywood is quickly gobbling up established branded properties, as evidenced by Disney’s pending acquisition of Marvel Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ recent exec overhaul of DC Comics.”

I’m scared that if they make this into a movie they’ll try to modernize it and it will be shitty. Like a HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL movie minus the singing…

True Story: I used to work for Diamond Comic Distributors. We were shipping an order of comics to a store in Canada. When you do that you have to submit a manifest to the Canadian Censors at the border to make sure any adult material meets Canada's censorship laws. Normally, you send a seperate list of the "adult titles" ahead of time to get them pre-approved for shipment.

I liked DICK TRACY but SPEED RACER was terrible.

Why haven't they made an Archie's movie long ago? It should be done in the ultra stylish way that they did Speed Racer or the (1990) Dick Tracy movie that Warren Beatty did. And don't do it like you did to the Brady Bunch, Scooby Doo, The Flintstones (which I honestly kinda enjoy watching as a guilty pleasure film) ... just make it proper and right. No updated "90210" bullshit ... make it like Clueless meets Election.

The border stopped the shipment at the border for 4 hours and tore open the entire shipment looking for an "adult title" on the manifest that had not been pre-approved. The title of the book was "Archies Gals-N-Pals Double Digest."

@Norman: Speed Racer was awesome! I just don't think people understood what it was. A kids movie, with a solid message attached to it. I loved it! action packed and fun to watch. "It doesn't matter if racing never changes. What matters is if we let racing change us. Every one of us has to find a reason to do this. You don't climb into a T-180 to be a driver. You do it because you're driven." That line defines that movie.

Norman Dick Tracy is my favorite comic book movie of all time! As for Speed Racer ... I have only seen parts of it, so I can't talk about the movie, I can make a note that it is visually stunning and stylistic and that was the remark that I made about what they need to do with Archie.

Speed Racer was the truth. It had a simple solid plot, looked and sounded like the cartoon, and was visually nuts. Slept on. Cats trip 'cause they want their childhood heroes to be more hardcore than they really were.
