Blizzard Will Only Approve 'Starcraft' Movie If Cameron Does It

A World of Warcraft movie is already in development at Legendary Pictures with Sam Raimi attached to direct. Could StarCraft: The Movie be next? According to a recent interview with Rob Pardo - the EVP of game design at Blizzard - he mentions that the only reason it hasn’t happened already is because there haven’t been any talented enough people to approach Blizzard.

The reason a WoW movie got the go ahead is because of Legendary’s impressive track record and it’s a partnership that made sense for the kind of movie they desired for their franchise. Pardo also states that if James Cameron decided he wanted to make a StarCraft film tomorrow, and approached them with a deal, Blizzard would ‘probably sign that’.

Um, let’s see - James Cameron’s combined films have grossed more than $1.9 billion, DOMESTICALLY - of course they’d ‘probably sign that’. If Cameron wanted to make a movie idea about fire-breathing midgets who ride around the universe on Harley-Davidson Unicorns, saving interstellar species from Skeletor’s Uncle, then it would get made.

Despite the poor showing of other video game adaptations, StarCraft is a franchise that has wonderful potential. I just hope Blizzard isn’t holding out for Cameron. There are other more-than-capable filmmakers (Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Neil Blomkamp, Duncan Jones, and Ridley Scott to name a few) out there that could deliver a great StarCraft movie.

Whatever happens, it’s not going to happen soon. So in the meantime, us SC fans will just have to make due with the game’s cinematic cut scenes and the 43 hours players such as myself average on a weekly basis.
