Bryan Singer to Ruin…I Mean Helm Battlestar Galactica?

By Supascoot on 08.14.2009

Just when you think it’s over, we are hit with some more Battlestar Galactica news. Hitfix.com reports that Bryan Singer has been approached to produce and possibly direct a big budget theatrical version of BSG. But will it be a continuation of the 70’s mini-series or the epic TV series that wowed us with its finale?

Bryan Singer was previously connected to BSG prior to the new series ever premiering. Singer, with Tom De Santo, had worked up a treatment involving the Cylon invasion, but this project was shelved after 9/11 due to fears that the imagery of the invasion might be capitalizing on the tragic events and visuals. Both Singer and De Santo moved on to work on other projects, while Ron Moore and David Eick went forward with their celebrated vision of BSG.

So if Singer is now attached again to the cult hit, where does the movie stand compared to the other incarnations? It seems a little ridiculous to continue the current story from the series when several projects ("Caprica") already underway are doing that already. Not to mention I don’t believe a significant amount of time has passed to introduce the characters and story onto the big screen.

Singer’s earlier involvement gave us some concept art based off of the 70’s TV mini-series, which actually looks pretty cool, and very true to the classic BSG. This makes it seem more likely it would be a continuation or even a reboot of the classic story of Battlestar Galactica, even though he developed the earlier project with a different studio.

But hold on, whatever happened to the rumored Glen Larson produced Battlestar Galactica movie, which was going to be a totally new take on the story? Has that already been thrown to the fishes or is this the same project that Singer is moving in on? This could possibly mean collaboration between Singer, Larson, and maybe even De Santo to bring a completely new vision of the BSG saga to the world. While I’m admittedly not the biggest fan of Singer’s after “Superman Returns”, “The Usual Suspects” is still one of my favorite films, so you can’t argue that he knows how to make a movie work. Can he handle the over the top visuals and sci-fi magic that is BSG? Or will it turn into two boring hours that destroy the future of the Battlestar Galactica franchise? I can’t answer that, but maybe you can. Let us know what you think. Should we leave Battlestar Galactica alone, or let Singer have his way with it?

So I'm not much of a Battlestar fan, so this is one of those situations where I don't know the backstory so any bumbling on Singer's part won't really affect me. I really dislike Singer though. The Superman movie was alright but he should have made it totally different. We've been waiting how long for a new Supe's and he gives up that shit? Superman running around with small shit and dealing with Luthor. Luthor should not have been in the movie at all. but whatev.

I Love Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" ... I mean it would've been perfect if it wasn't for the kid and the problem of a miss cast Lois Lane. So, I've got zero problem with Singer helming Battlestar Galactica.

My main problem with Superman Returns is very simple...I just want to see Supes fight someone...like, in a fight! We havent had a single knuckle dragger in 4 Superman movies, and i do not count his fight with Nuclear Man (played by Mark Pillow) in Superman IV a fight, they flew around each other for 10 mins. i want to see Superman slug it out with someone who can take it!!

I like what he did with Superman. I've never seen a BSG not once. Yes I know, tie me up in front of a firing squad and shoot me. Yet I am curious to see what he does with this. I'm sure it won't be a total shit box like G.I. Joe.

My sister just told me about this and I'm stunned beyond belief, I've only recently gotten into BSG after my brother bought me the first two seasons, and it's amazing. I just cant believe they're looking to reboot a franchise thats only recently been succesfully rebooted, it makes no sense what so ever and as much as I like Singer as a filmaker can only do more harm than good

I agree with Smallville, its too soon. I am a Battlestar Galactica nut, old and new...yes even Galactica 1980 lol. To reboot a franchise so soon after a reboot has just finished is a bit crappy, even more so considering how awesome that reboot was. I admit i will still watch it to seewhat they do but its going to have to be something so utterly special to improve on the latest version... and if theres any mention of 3D tied to this i really will do my nut ha ha

Im not much into BSG, but Ill see anything Singer does. I think he is one of the best directors working right now. His films always seem to cut down on senseless chatter, and cut right to the meat and bones of the dialogue, which forces actors to truly act.

There is NO need for this. The t.v show reboot was amazing.
