DiCaprio Entering 'Twilight Zone'

twilight zone

When I was a kid my dad was always watching THE TWILIGHT ZONE on Sci-Fi. I grew up next to him on the couch and later bought him the DVD sets. I have fond memories of the original Twilight Zone. The 1980’s version not as much, but the general idea, very cool.

Sci Fi Wire is reporting Appian Way, Leonardo DeCaprio’s production company, along with Warner Bros are bringing it back to the big screen. Rand Ravich has been hired to pen a script.

The original Twilight Zone series ran on CBS for five seasons starting in 1959. It was resurrected as a TV show in 1985-’89 and again in 2002. It was also made into a feature film in 1983, with Dan Aykroyd and directors such as Steven Spielberg and John Landis helming segments.

Chances are even if you’ve never seen the old show, you know many of the stories. It was spoofed several times by The Simpsons, Futurama, and Family Guy. It get referacned so often most people don’t even notice anymore, from The Wonder Years and Veronica Mars to Uncle Buck and Wayne’s World. Twilight Zone is such a huge part of our pop culture, like Star Wars and Citizen Kane, most people don’t realize the effect it’s had on everything that came after it. It’s about time it got a big time reboot, introduce it to a new generation…just don’t fuck it up please.

Fun thing for me. I spent a part of my childhood living in a city that neighbored Rod Serling's home town of Binghamton, NY. In many of the episodes when he refers to towns or travelling. The towns mentioned are all the towns around where he lived. The town I lived in at the time is mentioned a few times and i've been to many of the rest.

I kind of never understood the whole idea of Twilight Zone movie--the whole point of it is that it's an anthologized SERIES of short stories. I know that there's plenty of anthology films, but isn't this better-served as a kick-ass TV series that retains a lot of what made the original work--maybe even a retro feel to the 'hosted' (Rod Serling) segments?

No reason why this can't be the first in a series of movies...

I had a social studies teacher in jr. high that would show us an episode of the Twilight Zone every Friday. Quizzes and tests would have bonus questions about the last week's episode. Those were the only questions I got right. And I still watch the marathon every New Year. I kind of see where Zombiezeus is coming from and would have to agree. I mean, a full length movie might just desperately drag things out. Still, I'm curiously interested.
