Even More Captain America Casting News...

By Brian Kronner on 03.10.2010

This comes today from FILM DRUNK via DEADLINE:

Cap Possibles

Marvel has slightly expanded its search — adding actors that I’m told include Chris Evans.  Of the original contenders, two are still in serious contention: Mike Vogel (Cloverfield – second from left) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy – left). Hedlund was on Marvel’s original wish list but didn’t test at first. Scheduling was the reason, but I also heard his reps balked when Marvel informed them that the job would include options for 9 future films and a salary of only around $300,000. It’s not going to work out for the other actors who tested: Chace Crawford (CW’s Gossip Girl), John Krasinski (NBC’s The Office), Scott Porter (NBC’s Friday Night Lights), Michael Cassidy (CW’s Privileged) or Patrick Flueger (Brothers).

Now like I said yesterday, I didn’t think Jim Halpert would be Cap, but like yesterday, I’m now just passing along more info. Of the 4 guys above, Chris Evans is probably my favorite, but I don’t want him either. He’s great as Johnny Storm (despite the FF movies blowing) but doens’t have the gravity to play Cap.

Now, as Fisticufflinks has already pointed out on the boards, Wilson Bethel is also in the running.

Cap2

Also from the boards commenter Grimmey71 gave us this link from CAPTAIN-AMERICA.US which 100% I agree with. This is what Cap is all about:

spidey and cap

Cap turns away and says, "I remember the first time I really understood what it was to be an American…What it was to be a patriot. I was just a kid…A million years ago, it seems sometimes. Maybe twelve. I was reading Mark Twain. And he wrote something that struck me right down to my core…something so powerful, so true, that it changed my life. I memorized it so I could repeat it to myself, over and over across the years. He wrote –’In a republic, who is the country? Is it the government which is for the moment in the saddle? Why, the government is merely a temporary servant: it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn’t. It’s function is to obey orders, not originate them. Who, then is the country? Is it the newspaper? Is it the pulpit? Why, these are mere parts of the country, not the whole of it, they have not command,  they have only their little share in the command. In a monarchy, the king and his family are the country: In a republic it is the common voice of the people each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. It is a solemn and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catchphrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn’t. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide it against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have your duty by yourself and by your country. Hold up your head. You have nothing to be ashamed of’."

Cap continues, "Doesn’t matter what the press says. Doesn’t matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn’t matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: The requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree besides the river of truth, and tell the whole world - No, you move."

spidey and cap2

Now find me an freaking actor who can pull that off.

Again, it's called ACTING!Good God, you think these people only played one role in their entire lives. You're essentially looking for someone who can be in his early 30s, yet actually be 70 years old. I'm sorry, but Nicolas Cage is the only choice.

It's moments like that this may be the hardest casting decision EVER. On a side note, the other day I was thinking about iconic Captain America moments and not only did I think of that same scene, I put that last panel as my desktop background. Spooky, right? Right?

I'm sorry ... but is that a faint whiff of sarcasm Worf? or are you just smoking crack?

If Fan Boys had their way, Jean Claude Van-Damme and Steven Seagal would have gone down in history as Peter Parker and Frank Castle. Oh, and Nathan Fillion would be Reed Richards, Matt Murdock, Steve Rogers, Hal Jordan, Ben Grimm, Sue Storm and Stan Lee in the biography of his life. Fan boys suck.

WORF - How big an asshole are you? Seriously what the fuck are you talking about? No one said Chris Evans could do it, but I agree with the Doc that he'd be a better pick that Krasinski, though still a terrible pick. And if you hate Fanboys so much what the fuck are you doing reading Comic Movie website? Hypocritical Douche.

to a scene like that. Time that can't be spent on explosions and fights. Time that needs to be spent on dialogue and character discovery and development. We all agree that it should be there but what are the real chances that Hollywood is going to put it in there? Even Batman couldn't have his real dramatic moment until the sequal and he is a much more recognizable and widely known character.

A standing ovation for one Mr. Norman.

Look at the face of Captain America in that last panel. The face may be young but it carries a great deal of gravity. The "weight of the years" are there in the eyes. I have looked at the various actors that are being proposed and I am not seeing that gravity nor the potential (in the more dramatic moments of their work) for it. But let me play Devil's Advocate for a moment. Do you really see a moment like this appearing in an action movie? It takes a lot of time to build to a scene like t

Whiff of sarcasm? No, just rage at an idea that Chris Evans can do something John Krasinski can't. Good God, people.

In the end, everyones bitching and complaining isn't gonna change a single thing about this film. I am honestly glad that none of you have a say on who plays who. lol I laugh when I read shit like "if they fuck this movie up I'll never watch movies again" or anything along those lines lol I tell ya, you'll get over it.

It won't be Chris Evans, so relax.

Steven Pasquale is the guy who should play Cap, fucking White Sean from Rescue Me

he's gotta' have scenes like that to show why these people with world ending superpowers look up to him.

and no i wont munk, i wont watch another movie i haven't already seen for as long as humanly possible if they fuck the cap movie up. i wont fuckin' do it, it wont happen, and does a scene like that need to be in the cap movie? they have to man, caps a leader, hes gotta' have not one, but a few fuckin' scenes like that bro. batman is batman, i mean, are there plans for a justice league movie anytime soon? because if cap is gonna be leading the likes of thor, the hulk, iron man, and the like he's

your jumping from Marvel to DC back to Marvel there dude.

when you make a batman movie you don't need to show why people follow him, so you just take all that time and replace it with shit blowing up or trucks flippin' via trip wire. but with cap you gotta' have scenes like that or you will wonder why thor doesn't just blast him with mjolnir.

2010-03-10 20:03:44
MUNKRAWK
Also, why the hell does anybody put stock into rumors? Every single movie is the same ride. Oh this guy is gonna be the star, no this guy. no wait maybe this guy. Then everyone goes oh shit, Fuck damn, COOL. fuck. then the movie comes out and all you hear is FUCK, I HATE IT, I LOVE IT. AWESOME. THAT FUCKIN BLEW. same ol tune.

Will this Cap be the same Cap for the Avengers movie? Because I can't see any of them holding their own when their at the same scene as Downey Jr. This is probably the one of the hardest castings for any superhero movie ever. Gods and heroes alike fall in line when Cap tells them to.

I read the site for news. I could not stand the fanboy bitching and whining any longer. Every time a movie is cast, you guys act like someone punched a bunny in the balls. Then, the movie comes out and all is well again. Why not skip the first part for once?

MUNKRAWK
I agree to a point Worf, but some movies are badly cast and then they suck, lol. If you have a good story and a shitty cast you can have a good movie (hit or miss). You can have the same story with a good cast and have a GREAT MOVIE. I know where everyone is coming from, we don't want our heroes fucked up. but honestly, like I said you can't do shit about it, so chilllllllll :)

2010-03-11 00:03:59
MUNKRAWK
I'll change that to we can't do shit about it. so everyone chill

what people need to realize is that not just one film is in jeopardy here, both cap's movie and the avengers movie are on the line. you are casting the LEADER of the avengers here, you cant miscast this role. financially they have to make the right choice, these first 2 movies will set the stage for a series of 3 cap movies and 3 avenger movies.

2010-03-11 01:03:39
vxplaya23
however, i will say that they are doing the right thing by bringing in as many people as they can to try out for the role. personally, i would have preferred chris hemsworth for the role of cap rather than thor. it would be a bit easier to stomach a thor miscast than a cap miscast.

where ya gettin those numbers?

VX, get over it. If they make a bad choice, they recast. It's not a lock all those actors stick around for 3 movies. I'm not sure Downey commits to three or four Iron Man movies AND 3 Avenger movies. No way in hell Edward Norton does. I'm sure whoever they get to play Ant Man probably will, because that person will have no self-esteem.

Good movies go south when actors change hands ... especially lead actors. And Yes, I realize that there are exceptions ... but this is usually the case.

I honestly don't think that there is anyone alive who can portray Cap. If there is it sure as hell wont be anyone in Hollywood now. They may have to go with someone new, someone unknown.

2010-03-11 09:03:27
WorfWWorfington
Fisticuff, it doesn't usually happen at all. The Burton/Schumacher Batman series had three actors, but they weren't the problem. Had Burton directed Val Kilmer and stuck to his vision, it would have been fine. Edward Norton was an improvement over Eric Bana. Those really are the only instances I can think of.

2010-03-11 09:03:36
WorfWWorfington
No, it would include OPTIONS for 9 films. Matthew Broderick was signed to do two Godzilla sequels, for the love of God. 10 movies? That's basically 15-20 years worth of work, unless you want these movies pooped out like the Twilight series. No way one actor lasts that long.

2010-03-11 09:03:39
WorfWWorfington
Martini, then we'd have to hear about an unknown. Get DJ Qualls to play Steve Rogers pre-serum and CGI Cap.

Worf, if you read the article, it says that Cap will be in 10 movies. 10. That makes casting important because they don't want to have to recast later. Personally I just hope they pick right and prove me wrong.

Major difference between Nick Fury and Cap, unless you want Cap to have cameos and apparently, the world will collapse in on itself if Cap isn't done just perfectly.

2010-03-11 10:03:45
Dr. Kronner
That is why they are finding someone who is willing to stick around. Just like Sam Jackson's 11 picture deal.

Worf Ang Lee's "HULK" and Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" are two completely seperate films. Not a sequal. Fact! Films go south (generally) when the cast changes, FACT! The reason you can't think of them is because they go south. Often times they are only released on DVD. If Tim Burton did the Val Kilmer Batman film ... it wouldn't have happenned. Case in point, it didn't. Wake up in the real world Worf. Stop living in your brain.

I think it's more like that I'm trying my best to be an Asshole to you. So think of it more like Danny McBride in Eastbound and Down saying, BOOM!

When you type "fact" like that, I'm reminded of the guy in "Groundhog Day" who kept saying "BING!" over and over again.

I actually don't mind CHris Evans for Cap. Of the names on that list he is the best choice. Check out his performance in Sunshine. Still of course there are many others who would be better choices. But for a young Cap he is (in my opinion) the best of that lot for the job.

Alright people, stop bringing up Channing Tatum. The guy is fucking terrible. I'd sooner cast F-Ron than Tatum. I actually think Ben McKenzie from SOUTHLAND would be good if he was just a little taller.

randydmonces
If Brad Pitt were younger he'd be the best Cap. This is tough. How about the Green Arrow guy in Smallville? He looks the part. Or Channing Tatum, he can probably pull-off a decent Cap.

2010-03-12 09:03:03
Fisticufflinks
Ben McKenzie is a pretty good choice, Doc ... but he's not on the "Hollywood" short list. Of the list I'm hoping for Wilson Bethel. Generation Kill cements him for me. I'd prefer Charlie Hunnam, but he's a Brit and everyone is dead set against that notion, so I'll settle for Bethel.
