John Krasinski a ‘Virtual Lock' for Cap?

By Brian Kronner on 03.09.2010

FILM DRUNK earlier reported, from an unconfirmed source, that THE OFFICE’s Jim Halpert could be your next Captain America.

Cap

"Insiders at the Marvel compound tell Fox 411 that he is close to landing the superhero gig of his life.  “John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests,” our source tells us.  ”He has screen tested 2 times so far.  It’s very likely that he will be the new Captain America.  He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week.”
At this point, Krasinski is the main focus at Marvel.  “The big bosses are having him read with multiple actresses up for the female leads.  They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else.”

If this is true, which I don’t think it is, it would kill me.

There is also a rumor that Dane Cook auditioned, that might’ve been even worse…

dane cap

I have to be honest, I didn’t realize how much I cared about the Cap movie till I wrote that last piece about it. I guess I just always took for granted what Captain America represents to me. I was never a big ‘Avengers’ guy, but always repected what they were trying to do with the charater. If any of these casting rumors turn out to be true I feel it would totally betray the nature of the character. And again, I don’t think this will happen, but I felt the responability to at least pass it on here. And I used to really like Krasinski, but Pam and Jim getting together ruined THE OFFICE so now it sickens me to look at him. For a while, behind ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, that was the funniest show on TV, and it’s just sad what it’s turnned into.

Ryan McPartlin (Captain Awesome in Chuck) for Cap, please. Or Jensen Ackles.
I'm actually semi-okay with Krasinski as he looks more like he belongs with the 40's-era definition of "masculinity" than today's ultra-chiseled, steroid-enhanced people. As of right now, Marvel is batting 1.000 on casting choices - Norton and Downey were both perfect - so I'll hold out hope.

So, because of what his character does on one show, he is completely ruined for any other role? Whatever. Have fanboys ever been RIGHT about their casting whining?

You're right WOrf on the whole fanboys thing, I have some points, but I submitted them in an article I'm hoping goes live soon so I'll save them for that. But I do strongly feel that Captain America is a bit more than a comic book character and is a completely different animal than Spider-Man or Bruce Banner. Cap has to have the presence that inspires you to rush into the fires of hell with the guy, Krasinski doesn't have that charisma.

Jenson Ackles kinda resembles Steve Rogers, except way to thin. There is a difference between being muscular and being bulky. Take Jensons look and say Dominic Purcells build and thick neck. you would have Cap. but definatly not Dominic Purcells ugly mug, lol

from what i see of that guy on the office he couldn't inspire me to go take a shit, so either he's the greatest actor ever and can pull it off which would be awesome or this shit is gonna fuckin' suck and i won't ever watch another movie. cause they did say like they need a guy who can play a weakling, and just by lookin' at em you can tell he can pull that off.

When I think of Cap I think of the conversation he had with Spider-man on the roof top during civil war http://captain-america.us/articles/civil-war.htm , and I try to think who could pull that off. Cap is the Man and should be handled with respect.

if you ask men what is manly they will tell you someone who looks like arnold is the man, but women run the media so you get scrawny little fucks who wear lady pants, back in the 40's man is when all the muscle bound shit started to take off, 40's n' 50's n' shit. so they aint' no way in hell i agree with that shit. cap needs to look like a soldier, that guy looks like a fuckin' paper boy.

You really cannot judge any actor based on their previous roles. Take John Cho for example. I thought this milf chanting moron would spell disaster in Star Trek. I was wrong and am glad that I was. He IS Sulu now.

WorfWWorfington and Toni - I'm so sick of the whole Fanboy bashing thing. It is the insistence of the fanboys that movies like Dark Knight and Iron Man get made. Hollywood never cared about this genre till they found out their dollars could be effected by internet chatter. And as far as being right, I'd say the fanboys hit more often that Hollywood.

john cho is also "that guy", he's been in like four trillion movies, and in star trek he was on screen for a whomping like 10 minutes, and omg even then he was a "token asian guy with a sword" didn't see that shit comin'.

Don't know how I feel about this. How about Sam Worthington from Avatar and that Terminator flick, he might be a good fit.

That's crap, Norman. Many fanboys were against Michael Keaton, Tobey Maguire, the web shooters coming out of Spidey's body, Robert Downey Jr., making Rogue younger, making Kingpin black and John Cho. If people made movies for guys in comic book stores, movies would make $4,408.23 each. The guy who went down on men in "Less Than Zero" is Iron Man. The guy who played Curly in "Oklahoma" is Wolverine. The guy who played Harold is Sulu. And conversely, the guy who played Eomer SUCKED as M

He's not blond and he doesn't have blue eyes. To be honest I don't think there is anyone who could portray Captain America to my liking. It's a shame

Norman, I'll tell you this right now, fanboy insistence is no what gets films made, if that were the case I'm pretty sure the world would have been subjugated to a Firefly trilogy by now. Superhero movies make money because of the casual fans that vaguely remember the stories from when they grew up and because of kids. Dark Knight really being the only exception to this, sort of, I did see a ton of Dark Knight toys.

Ok now WORF, most people thought Tobey made a shitty Parker, making KINGPIN black was stupid, and I never heard a single person complain about Downey or John Cho. As far as Keaton goes, 21 years ago, it wasn't so much fanboys who complained, it was everyone. The WALL STREET JOURNAL had a front page article about how bad the casting was.

Yes, because Affleck dying his hair red saved that movie.

The world would be a better place with a FIREFLY trilogy.

For me, the hair and eyes are really inconsequential to who Cap is.

He's a bad choice. I'm not liking the direction this movie is heading in. Poor director ... Wolfman was WEAK! from a Direction standpoint ... If they fuck the Cap. movie up ... all of the groundwork done thus far goes out the window. Let's take a step back and do it a bit slower if we have to. Cause nothing would be better that half-ass.

Also, over at /film this is the newest news about Cap. Casting:

John Krasinski NOT Captain America! Chris Evans, Mike Vogel, Wilson Bethel and Garrett Hedlund in the Running.

Of the original contenders, only two remain “in serious contention”: Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy). Marvel has also added Chris Evans to the mix. Vogal and Hedlund have a very similar look. I’m not sure what comic book fans will think of Evans, as the actor has already appeared i

Update: Heat Vision adds that Wilson Bethel, who starred in HBO’s Generation Kill and The Young and the Restless, is also one of the producer’s top contenders.

Now ... MY TWO CENTS ... the other stuff is all cut and pasted from /film. I hope that out of all of these Wilson Bethel gets the role. Generation Kill was solid. Too bad HBO isn't behind making the Captain America film ... they rarely do bad things. Wilson Bethel looks the part. He can be bulked up more ... and I think he could be convincing enough. Too bad that Jeremy Renner is almost 50.

in the Marvel Film Universe as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the Fantastic Four films. Hedlund is my biggest concern about the upcoming Tron sequel (I didn’t think he came off good in the short clips in the new trailer). Hedlund was apparently on Marvel’s original wish list but was unable to test for the role at first due to “scheduling conflicts.”

would hbo really be able to finance the entire film? i mean they do good work like rome/the wire/just about any series they release, but i mean aint' that because they have to? if you spend all that money on rome and it flops then they is in the poor house know whatimeen, it aint like a major network that can keep pumpin' out reality trash to pay the bills cause of ads.

Hbo could own other networks. It probably takes more money to keep a high end series alive than it would to finance a movie.

i don't think so man, i mean you gotta' think about it like this, showtime makes high quality series and they don't have the revenue of hbo right but they still get the job done. and hbo can't make as much money as a network because they don't pack ad's right, that's why they release a new series like every 5 years, even if its good its still one series. look at amc, they got breaking bad and mad men right, now they got the walking dead in talks but they still don't compete with the other networ

like i remember watchin' behind the scenes of band of brothers and they said they only had one set for the entire series, the stars were the guy from dreamcatcher and ron livingston, i wonder what type of fees they command right? if they were gonna' make a movie it would have to be a hit or their wallets would get raped, thats why they take so much time with series, its gotta' do well.

bubaroni how much do you think they have to spend on a film like Cap. America? I mean ... REALLY have to? I garantee that if you put it in the right hands ... not that much. But they won't. In fact ... they haven't. Neill Blomkamp only spent like $30 mill on District 9. HBO could easily cover that much revenue. Plus they would have no problem getting more Duckets from investers that know they'd be making their money back. Just sayin.

besides the fact district 9 was trash. and that whole "in the right hands" statement is thrown out the window, the guy who handles it is going to make a fuck ton of action scenes that won't be cheap, cap is defined on the battlefield, if you have only a handful of action then it will feel incomplete. but then again i don't know how much a ton of dynamite costs, or actors fee's, or anything else.

$30 million? You want papier mache rocks and toy guns??? You don't buy the CATERING budget of a superhero movie for $30 million. Good God.
