Kick-Ass Footage Due at Comic-Con!

By Christopher Brown on 07.02.2009

Mark your calendars, fan boys…Thursday, July 23rd, San Diego Comic-Con: The first footage of Mark Millar’s Hollywood adapted Kick-Ass will be shown toward the end of the day.

In case you’ve been off-world fighting an alien invasion or trapped in a third world country fighting to free the indiginous people, Kick-Ass follows the exploits of one Dave Lizewski, a high school misfit who decides to don a superhero outfit and fight crime but finds himself in too deep when real criminals, murderers and assassins all come out of the woodwork. The film version stars Aaron Johnson as the title character, with Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Nicholas Cage, and Chloe Moretz.

Am I the only one to have read the first issue of "Kick Ass", recognize that the overly-vaunted 'realism' that was supposed to be the entire point was in fact just as unrealistic and barely-realized as every other superhero story out there, and decided to not follow the rest of the story? Am I missing something?

I haven't read a damned issue. The Premise didn't interest me from the get go. ...AM I missing Something as well?

I agree that Kick Ass is not a "over-vaulted" realism. Whether it's meant to be that, I don't know. I guess that there are many degrees of that. Did Mark Millar state how realistic it would be? I'm sure you would know. It's basically taking our world and it tried to create a sightly more realistic vigilante story, BUT it clearly seems to be a reality somewhere between the real world and the superhero world.

Bottomline, though, Kick Ass still enjoyable, at least for me, especially if you don't impose some sort of rigit expectation of what you want it to be. Just judge it for it is and if you still don't like it, then fine. BTW, if you're jaded by the "unrealistic and barely-realized" superhero stories you've read, might I suggest 'The Sword'? Not that you are jaded, you just sound that way. :)
