Leonardo DiCaprio as Spawn!

That was a lie.  But it sure grabbed your attention, didn’t it?  And if there is one thing Todd McFarlane is good at – it’s grabbing the spotlight and never letting go.  And now he is on record as wanting DiCaprio in a Spawn movie.  But before we utter a collective, “WTF?” let’s take a minute and breathe.

McFarlane envisions the Spawn movie done by blending the styles of horror movies and crime dramas.  DiCaprio would be playing one of the detectives working on  a case and discovering the fact that “something weird is out there”.  In my mind’s eye I can see Spawn being shot this way and the subsequent failure the movie would be.  A Spawn movie where Spawn isn’t the lead character?  On what idiot planet in this multiverse does this even sound like a remotely good idea?  Lot of people think we should do right by the creators of the characters we all love, but what do we do when the creator is spitting out moronic ideas like this?

MTV News has the interview here.

In other news, in a throwaway quote in that very same article, McFarlane mentioned he probably couldn’t Sam and Twitch in the movie because he’s pitching them as a separate property to Hollywood.  I don’t know about you guys but I’d much rather see a Sam and Twitch movie than another Spawn.  Can we cast John Goodman as Sam and Bill Irwin as Twitch?  Let’s make this happen!

Woah, let's not get crazy. SPAWN is in NO way an 'old school comic'. He came outin 1992. Roughly 50 years after Batman and Superman. Not to mention, what makes you think Spawn isn't in the movie? McFarlane just said he would be the main character.

It's like if you did a Batman movie from Gordon's perspective. Batman would still be in the movie...

wtf a movie without spawn is fuckin horrible

i think if they rebooted the film again then it could be cool and lets not forget SPAWN,the character is a very old school comic and should be up there with superman and batman, etc etc

i know that sounds crazy

Ever since I was a snot-nosed kid who shouldn't have known better, I've known that 'Spawn' was a decent premise with horrendous execution, and it's never improved.

It's actually sad that McFarlane is making proclamations like this because it shows how way, way, way, waaaaaaaaayyy out of touch with the realities of Hollywood he is if he thinks, even a little, that he's actually going to get Leonardo DiCaprio.

And the idea for his new "Spawn" movie (not just from this interview but

I'd be down for a "Sam and Twitch" movie... where Spawn shows up here or there... that could be cool.  Get John Goodman and Guy Peirce or Adrien Brody in for that movie and I'd be there all the way.

Forget another Spawn movie, when is McFarlane going to finally finish Spawn the animated series? Stop with the toys and give us the final season of that show Todd!

Spawn could be done way kick ass now than that crap movie they put out years ago......although John lequaizamo(?) was bad ass as the clown bastard...........Also they should make a movie based off of Maxx from image comics back in the day....the cartoon they had of that was kick ass

A Batman movie from Gordon's perspective would be terribly uninteresting. I dunno, McFarlane is kind of a dumbass at times, and the spawn series has been a real yawn for the last few years or so.

Also, they had a Maxx cartoon series for a little while on Liquid Television, but it was pretty short lived. Eh. Also, too fucking goofy of a premise for a movie. They'd completely rearrange the costume, and before you know it, it's just some pile of crap on the screen titled "The Maxx."

How can you say a Jim Gordon movie would be "terribly uninteresting". A cop movie set in Gotham City would be sweet, Batman could be a background figure, Jim Gordon is a great character in his own right.
