Life After Comics For '100 Bullets'?

By Zipp on 07.08.2009

Well, Brian Azzarello, author of the fantastic ten year long story “100 Bullets”, without a shadow of a doubt, knows how to a write a freakin’ comic book.

And now, apparently he knows how to throw a funeral.

That’s right, a funeral. For the recently concluded series “100 Bullets”:

“And that, according to Azzarello, is why he’s treating Saturday’s “funeral” for the series like the passing of a good friend. With booze, a pianist and torch singer, and art by Risso and series cover artist Dave Johnson adorning the walls (later to be auctioned off for comics charity The Hero Initiative), there isn’t likely to be a dry eye — or glass — found in the place.”

The man brings up a valid point. Shit, I don’t think I’ve known any of my friends for as long as he’s known “100 Bullets”. After spending a good chunk of your life writing a comic book series, seeing it end must be pretty hard.

Being a fan of the series and seeing it end was pretty hard too. Honest to God, it was one of the best (and consistently best) series out there.

However, there might just be some light at the end of the tunnel for us “100 Bullets” fans.

Could a movie be in the works?

Well, actually, not really. It’s just too large of a story to fit into one film, and fuck, even three or four.

But a TV show has not been ruled out.

“Television — there’s an idea!” says Azzarello, “That’s all I’ll say. Television… or maybe something that’s not just TV.”

If “100 Bullets” were made into a TV show, I can only imagine it being played on something like Showtime or HBO. Taking the graphic violence, sex and language out of “100 Bullets” would be like taking the noodles out of chicken noodle soup. It’s just not right, will taste like shit, and will theoretically be a separate entity.  If this were made into a show on one of those channels, I would actually consider buying something beyond basic cable.

And what this about something that’s not just TV? Is he referring to an internet only kinda show? If any idea were to begin that movement, “100 Bullets” would probably be the best bet for getting it off the ground. (By the way, the internet is the future of television. Mark my words!)

And sadly (for some of you, I haven’t seriously played a video game console beyond the SNES), the “100 Bullets” video game is officially dead.

“It’s a really seductive name for a video game, but if you try to stay true to the story of “100 Bullets,” it’s not a very good video game,” said Azzarello. “[The “100 Bullets” game] was nothing I was ever looking for, but when the opportunity arose, we thought, might as well see what happens.”

So sorry gamer nerds, your chance to kill people mercilessly as Lono are gone for the time being.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a TV show. With all the bullshit that populates the airwaves these days, having something like “100 Bullets” come on would be a breath of fresh air. The series already made the rest of a medium look bad by comparison, why can’t it do it a second time?

Check out the rest of the article from MTV here.

Oh yeah, let’s play a little game. In the comments section, act like the “100 Bullets” TV show has been green lighted and it’s your job to pick the cast members. Anything goes.

I have yet to pick all of mine out, but I will tell you one of them.

Agent Graves = Clint Eastwood.

Am I wrong? Think you can do better? Discuss.

CASTING! Let's be realistic and pick people who would ACTUALLY be in a TV series--so no huge movie stars... Agent Graves: (unfortunately Clint Eastwood would never do it)I'm torn between two choices. Lance Heriksen or Chris Cooper. Dizzy: Michelle Rodriguez Mr. Shepherd: Ray Liotta Lono: Clifton Collins Jr. Cole Burns: Rodrigo Santoro

ZOmbiezeus is right, plus HBO and DC comics are both subsidiaries of Time Warner.

Seriously, that means No Johnny Depp as whoever, I'm sick of seeing his name in every casting call. How about Sarah Chalke as Megan Dietrich? I like Henriksen as Graves as well, I'm also partial to Powers Boothe as either Medici or Madrid.

As my favorite comic series of all time this has been something I have thought long and hard over. Thematically I would love Eastwood for Graves for what it would represent: a spectre from a more honorable time (the old West) granting revenge for others in the modern day. THe best casting pick I've had was Neal Mcdonough for Victor.

Before we get to casting, I'd just like to point out that his sly reference to 'not just TV' could mean he's been talking to the most-likely recipient of a series, HBO, whose tagline for years was (and might still be) "It's not TV, it's HBO". Hmmmmm....

this would make a very good show on a hbo style network - do it like an ongoing series with someone trying to figure graves but each 100 bullets ( i have only read the 1st collected so far-bought it at 1/2 price bookstore) story is one hour episode--but zombie you have a good thing going on casting

I'd go with Lee Tergesen for Shepard, and I have no clue who could play Lono, you really need a human wall for that guy.

I don't care what anyone says: Clint Eastwood is Agent Graves. And any actor, no matter what their status is, will fall for a good story. If you don't believe me that check out Pulp Fiction or Lucky # Slevin. Good actors consider themselves artist and value a good story and 100 bullets is a great story. Also, Jon Seda from season 1 of OZ is Cole Burns. Check it out for yourself. 100 bullets is too big for Hollywood to screw up in a movie and needs to be a tv series on HBO.

The problem is Clint Eastwood is retired. I think Lance Heinriksen as Graves and Chris Cooper as Shepherd is tops. Neal Mcdonough would be great as Victor. Jon Seda as Cole Burns is inspired. Kevin Durand (Fred Dukes[Blob] - Wolverine, Smoking Aces) as Jack Daw. Chris Pine as Wylie Times. Guy Pearce as Milo Garrett. Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl 2) as Remi Rome Here's where I may lose you: The Rock as Lono. Lono is Hawaiian, massive, insane but intelligent. Plus he chews up scenery an

Graves: Scott Glenn (Silence of the Lambs) Shepherd: Chris Cooper Lono:Mickey Rourke (it's a stretch but he would be perfect) Jack Daw: Kevin Durand (Smokin Aces) Megan: Charlize Theron (she'd be a great femme fatale and she's really been doing smaller roles since Monster so this could be possible) Benito: Jared Leto (he has that look) Anwar Madrid: Powers Boothe Branch: Danny Devito (he's the right size and it seems possible since he likes doing odd roles like this) Dizzy: either Miche
