Loki Picks A Disguise For "Thor" Film

By Henok Kidane on 05.19.2009

Well, that came out of left field.

After a couple of months of rumors that Josh Hartnett would be taking on the role of the Norse God of Mischief, news came out this morning courtesy of Marvel.com that Tom Hiddleston was tapped to play the villainous Loki (that’s a link to his IMDB profile, but don’t bother - there’s NOTHING there).

Tom Hiddleston

Just look at that guy - I don’t know if it’s this particular picture or whatever, but he looks like a pale, pissy ice giant that ended up getting raised by Asgardians.

Meanwhile, for those of you wondering where you’ve seen Hiddleston before, you’ve probably got him mistaken with Cillian Murphy from "Batman Begins" or one of the 30-40 sparkly vampires from "Twilight"; granted, he did play Winston Churchill’s son in HBO’s "The Gathering Storm", but…well, if you’re the type of person who not only watched "Gathering Storm" but remembered his specific role, you’re probably not the type of person who comes to these types of sites.

As it turns out, Hiddleston’s a highly-trained classical actor, which is a very good thing not only because it lends itself to the idea that he can bring a sense of gravitas and cunning to the role, but because Hiddleston’s actually worked with "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh, on both the London production of Anton Chekhov’s "Ivanov" and the BBC series "Wallander".

So, we’ve got Kirk’s dad as Thor and Winston Churchill’s son as Loki. I’ll say it again; who’s going to play Dr. Donald Blake? Seeing as how Blake’s the human that Thor ends up connected to after Odin, lord of Asgard and Thor’s father, banishes him, it’s going to be an important role. Oh, and that reminds me - check out this quote as to the basic plotline for "Thor": "A powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an
ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans
as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero
when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces
of Asgard to invade Earth."

Sweet. Although I do have one more question; since Marvel’s making an obvious push towards using relatively unknown actors in this particular franchise, does this mean no Natalie Portman? OK, maybe casting Portman as Thor love-interest Lady Sif is a bit of a stretch, seeing as how she’s about 5’3, but you could still have her play Dr. Jane Foster. Either way, hopefully fans end up with Portman dressed either in Red Sonja-esque armor or a nurse outfit, so it kinda feels like a win either way…
