Marvel MMO in 2012

By Jeremy Walker on 03.25.2009

Mark your calendars for 2012 because it will be the year to get all your shit done. Not only do we have to worry about being on the brink of foreseen and foretold apocalypse, but now we also have to cram in the smorgasbord of lovely time killers and facemelters that our dear friends at Marvel keep popping out. What is the newest golden egg the Marvel goose has plopped into our grubby little paws? Keeping in mind this has nothing to do with music or television, the lads and lasses over at MTV  I am I don’t know about you, but my schedule is getting pretty crammed, I still have to skydive, become a famous novelist, and bowl a perfect Wii Bowling game. Now, on top of all of that crap I have to break in a new computer chair, fill up the desk drawers with Funyuns, and tell my girlfriend that she seriously is gonna have to wait. MTV's Multi-player Blog has reported that Marvel will be releasing their MMO in 2012.

“But Jeremy,” said the reader, “it’s still 2009. You’ll have plenty of time to do that crap.” No reader, I won’t, well, not according to Marvel’s president of worldwide consumer products, Simon Philips. “It sounds like a long way away, but it’s not,” he said. “We’ve got to create, together with [game publisher] Gazillion, that environment that is going to be a totally immersive experience and a perpetual storytelling experience as well.” He then went on to say that MMOs are “the next generation of storytelling.” If by storytelling he means “won’t leave the house” and by generation he means “people who play MMO’s” then I completely agree.

Lastly, Philips mentioned that the game will follow the mold set by games like World of Warcraft and City of Heroes but prior to its launch, Marvel will release another MMO aimed for 5 to 9 year olds called Super-Hero Squad that will be a “combination of a social networking site with gaming applications built within it” as well as a way to teach children that exercise doesn’t matter if you’re a great virtual super hero. Hell, that’s the code I live by, now where is my roommate? He owes me $20 for using smorgasbord in a sentence.
