McFarlane Has Started Writing "Spawn" Movie!

By Zombiezeus on 08.24.2009

This is just damned funny, is what this is.

According to Superherohype.com, Todd McFarlane…actually I’ll just cut and paste the whole damn thing ‘cause it’s so short:

"Spawn" creator Todd McFarlane has announced that he has officially begun writing the screenplay for a new movie based on the character.

"The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years," McFarlane said. "The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a standalone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary."

He added that "the tone of this ‘Spawn’ movie will be for a more older audience. Like the ‘Departed.’"

In August of 1997, New Line released a Spawn movie that grossed $87.8 million worldwide. It starred Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo and Martin Sheen.

Yes, Todd. The same people who went to see a movie directed by someone who is considered one of our greatest living directors, starrin Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio, will go to see a ‘creepy and scary’ movie called "Spawn". You’re totally on the ball and not even a little insane whatsoever.

Now, you’re aware of our snazzy little feature "Bam!Kapow! Studios", where we re-write popular Geek Movies the way we would have wanted them to be? Well those have about as much chance of happening as little Toddy’s new Spawn movie.

Let’s face facts, folks. McFarlane might have been big in the 90’s for awhile, but he has since squandered his fortune and popularity to become something of a has-been. I know he worked with HBO on the "Spawn" animated series that apparently some people liked it, but aside from that and this new movie he felt the need to announce the writing of, what else has he had going on? Of any significance, I mean.

Sorry folks, the guy’s delusional. This MIGHT get made, based on the name recognition factor alone (I don’t know if you know this, but Hollywood likes re-makes), but it’s going to be done cheap and dirty and end up on DVD. There’s a name for guys in the entertainment industry who have one big idea and try to prime that pump for the rest of their lives. That name is "Unemployed".

What do you guys think? Too harsh? Appreciate the fact that I didn’t make ONE joke about balls and money? Sound off…

But maybe he'll prove me wrong, which i truly hope he does. But most likely not.

Personally, i was a fan of the animated series (even though Spawn isn't that interesting of a character, BUT the idea of trying to re-hash his Spawn vision into another "Creepy and scary" movie as he ANNOUNCES it to the whole world like we've been twittleling our thumbs, waiting for his return, just sounds pathetic. In fact, i just feel bad for him at this point. I don't think he has any friends.

OK, Im gonna do it, Im gonna say it...I WANT another Spawn movie. Hurl your stones, but i think it could make a cool movie. I read somewhere he was thinking of it being more like a Sam & Twitch type movie, cop story with a Spawn background (at least thats something different) but i dont know, it could be epic done right (which unfortunately may mean not done by McFarlane)

I'm still waiting for something to come out with his Oz toys, animated or live action. Those things were freaky crazy.

The Sam and Twitch movie would be great! I love that idea. I just hope he doesn't get too much into the origin of Spawn, keeping him more mysterious and elusive, while focusing more on the Sam and Twitch partnership. Those two were my favorite characters in the books and the animated series.

really this could be pretty damn cool. The HBO series was great. I'm thinking that with Dark Knight and (to a lesser extent Watchmen) showing you can pull off a darker, smarter comic story,Todd has dusted off Spawn for another shot and i'm all for it. The only thing he should do is leave it to somebody that's really got a clue like Rodriguez or Del Toro.

- AFTER 1998 where people got burned by Liefeld and the Death of Superman then yeah I see him failing at this. But he didn't and he's not. Also, why do you say he's unemployed? His toys are STILL selling, some of his toys range over $200 dollars a piece now, wtf? He doesn't have to do anything, it's really the american dream.

What are you talking about dude? Don't get me wrong, I don't like his writing and I was smart enough to avoid Spawn in 92 but correct me if I'm wrong... didn't he sell a good 10 million copies of a single issue one year? Yup, I believe he has, *checks* yup. This guy knows how to pimp out the license, he's smart about how he's commercializing because he's looking at it from a marketing angle in terms of what the general public (by that I mean the exposed demographic) is interested in. Currently h

- his comic came out once again on a someodd 187th issue or w/e but he's going about it the same way he has with his toy sales approach to making more money. This is simply another cash out and nothing more and he knows it, so will he have someone to direct and produce this film? Duh. Why? He has the green for it. Will it be a hit? Probably not, but he's planning on doing it and from that stand point it'll get done since he has been doing things right at the right time. I mean if it was AFTER 19
