NBC Shakeup: 'HEROES' Out. 'THE CAPE' In.

By Brian Kronner on 05.18.2010

HEROES, which started off so strong but petered out in the sequel seasons, has been axed by NBC. The network, which had been mulling over the possibility of bringing the show back for a final, shortened season, has opted to end it instead. They have left open the possibility of a special or TV Movie to wrap it all up. It’s kind of sad. I really dug this show early on, but couldn’t believe how sharply, and how fast it nosedived.

HEROES, which premiered in 2006 to a staggering 14.3 million viewers and a 5.9 rating among adults 18-49, was NBC’s highest-rated fall drama premiere in five years. The show continued to hit ratings gold in subsequent episodes, including its season 2 premiere, which attracted 14.1 million viewers. But numbers fell sharply by season 3, due in part to a messy second season and the now-famous writers guild strike of 2007-08 that kept it off the air for months. Only 9.9 million viewers tuned in to watch ‘Heroes'’ third-season premiere, marking a 25 percent drop from season 2.

Not even the presence of Ali Larter and bringing in my obsession one of my favorite actresses, Kristen Bell could save it from declining interest.

Yes Kristen, it’s true, I stopped. I am sorry, there’s no excuse for my behavior, but I couldn’t bare it when they killed you off my dear.

Anyhow, the exit of HEROES doesn’t mark the surrender of NBC to appease the Geek-Community…

So now, to fill your superhero fix on NBC, we are about to be introduced to THE CAPE. The title seems sort of stupid, but lets take a look at the trailer…

I don’t know, I think it looks pretty cool. Summer Glau appears to be an Oracle type and Keith David is about as cool as they come. I’ll totally check this out. NBC describes the show as follows:

summer

"The Cape" is a one-hour drama series starring David Lyons ("ER") as Vince Faraday, an honest cop on a corrupt police force, who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. He is forced into hiding, leaving behind his wife, Dana (Jennifer Ferrin, "Life on Mars") and son, Trip (Ryan Wynott, "Flash Forward"). Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken Palm City, Faraday becomes "The Cape" his son’s favorite comic book superhero – and takes the law into his own hands. Rounding out the cast are James Frain ("The Tudors") as billionaire Peter Fleming – The Cape’s nemesis – who moonlights as the twisted killer: Chess; Keith David ("Death at a Funeral") as Max Malini, the ringleader of a circus gang of bank robbers who mentors Vince Faraday and trains him to be The Cape, Summer Glau ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") as Orwell, an investigative blogger who wages war on crime and corruption in Palm City; and Dorian Missick ("Six Degrees") as Marty Voyt, a former police detective and friend to Faraday. "The Cape" is a Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun production from executive producer/creator Thomas Wheeler ("Empire"), executive producer/director Simon West ("Con Air"), the executive producing team of Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun (NBC’s "Mercy), and executive producer Gene Stein ("Accidentally on Purpose").

Ouch!!! Thought I was the only one that made that connection. Show looks good but I think NBC is trying to find their way and if they play their cards right this might save their line up. Two things they might need to change, The name "The Cape = LAME" and possibly Summer. This chick is the harbinger of show cancellations.

Sounds utterly rediculous, but ill watch it. I wonder if Summer Glau being in this will mean that it gets cancelled too?

This looks kinda terrible. I might watch it, but it seems like it would be better off as a tv movie or something. Series sounds like it will go south quickly.

If your even remotely interested in this you'll watch the pilot. why wouldn't you? Then comes the decision to keep it on the watchlist or not.

I wouldn't say Cape gets canceled because of Glau's involvement, I say The Cape gets canceled because it's a dumb looking show. Glau ought to fire her agent and get one that doesn't get her parts on doomed from the beginning shows.
