Next 'Resident Evil' Film Dated

By GuardianOfChaos on 07.02.2009

Capcom’s hit franchise is once again hitting the big screen for another completely unrelated movie. A Sony insider told ShockTillYouDrop that the film is currently slated for release on September 17, 2010.  This will be the fourth installment in the series and will be titled Resident Evil: Afterlife.  For those who saw the third film, RE: Extinction, you will recall that the ending was left completely open to be finished in another film.

Warning of spoilers to follow.

The last film ended off with an army of Alice clones that she will most likely enlist to bring the fight to Umbrella in Japan.  Potential for this movie is both good and bad.  While it would be great in concept to have an army of Milla Jovovich’s kicking zombie ass, that’s probably not going to work out too well.  This is mainly due in part that they will probably be CGing Alice’s clones in an army and it’ll just feel too fake.  One of the biggest flaws with the third film is that they basically took the zombies more or less out of the picture.  Sure there were a few of them, but that almost seemed secondary in regards to the film.  The logic just seemed like they were halfway through the movie and realized “oh crap. We forgot to put zombies in” so there’s a magical crate that opens and zombies come out.

One of the biggest issues with the movie series is many fans felt it ignored the source material.  If you were able to accept the fact that it was a side story it worked ok in some respects.  Then in the second film they tried to tie it in more by involving Jill Valentine and Nemesis.  This however probably hurt the series more by involving characters from the canon storyline to the non-canon films.  I can forgive this because Nemesis was one of the few monsters in recent movie history that wasn’t just CG.  I also can forgive this because Sienna Guillory was spot on as Jill Valentine.  Then the third film came out and even people who could accept the whole side story idea got alienated with the apocalypse and desert world and all the other crazy stuff that was happening.  So with this third movie we’re left to wonder what else Umbrella can do.  What motivates them at this point since they basically have destroyed most of the world?  We’ll find out in time I suppose and I’ll probably still see it because I’m a sucker for cool action heroines.

Sound off B!K! readers.  Go or No Go on this new installment?

These movies have never been very good, yet I still continue to watch them because I still like zombie movies enough and I too, am a sucker for female action heroes. Hopefully, this will be the last and they can do a reboot of the series with a much more faithful adaptation of the original story that has unfolded so far in the games. And yeah, I know that will not happen.

Guardian of Chaos don't you get what Umbrella's motives are after making the world a desert they will release the sand worms making spice, than they will be even more profitable. The Spice must flow.

Meh. The first three were decent, but declining in quality. I'll see the next one, but not getting my hopes up. Did anybody see the animated DVD movie?

Alice's blood was said to be the cure for the virus at the end of "Extinction." So I hope they dont' forget to work that in.
