New 'Gatchaman' Poster

By Henok Kidane on 03.24.2009

I really wish Imagi Animation Studios would just decide whether or not they were making this. It's been a few years since I last heard of somebody possibly making a Gatchaman (some of you might remember it as Battle of the Planets) movie, but apparently at the 2009 Tokyo Anime International Fair this poster was seen at the Tatsunoko booth:

If you said to yourself, "Hey, that's Joe Asakura!" then congratulations, you get a gold star. It also means you know just about as much as I do about where this movie stands. Well, I'm flattering you a little bit; maybe not as much, but close. I know that Kevin Munroe (TMNT) was supposed to direct, but he got dropped and a replacement hasn't been chosen yet. I know that Paul Dini (!) is writing the story of five teenagers uniquely equipped to use various mechs to battle against the terrorist group "Galactor"…and that's pretty much it as far as things I know. Oh, but there's plenty of rumors floating about, if that's your thing. It'll probably be PG-13; it'll most likely focus on how members Ken, Joe, Jun, Jinpei and Ryu came together to form the team, and odds are the success/failure of Astro Boy will have a serious impact on whether or not this thing makes it out of development hell, since Imagi makes both.

Here's an idea: if Imagi's having trouble drumming up interest, just leak news that it's actually a "Voltron" movie. Trust me, that'll get plenty of people interested…
