First Look at 'Wolverine' Manga
By Henok Kidane

"I'm the best there is at what I do…and what I do is sulk morosely in a dark room while listening to the Cure." Emo's still listen to the Cure, right? Anyways, Logan's doing the manga thing now, with Del Ray Manga getting ready to release "Prodigal Sun", a shonen manga (shonen is a manga subset typically made of action titles aimed towards teenage boys) chronicling the growth of an angsty, teenage Wolverine. As the tagline goes, "This is not the Wolverine you know." Hate to break it to you, Marvel…actually, that's a lie, I really don't have a problem breaking it to you - it really is. From the preview pages I've seen, this iteration of Logan is a sulky loner that's good at fighting and bad at communication. Plus, he heals amazingly quickly, and for whatever reason he has a way with the ladies. Yeah, that's nothing like Wolverine. I mean, look at the official blurb: "Ever since being left in a nearby forest—with no memory of who he was or how he got there—Logan (or Wolverine, as his classmates sometimes call him) has been stuck in a martial arts school in the icy wilds of Canada." For God's sake, he's described as a "teenage rebel with a real good reason for having a real bad attitude." And the memory gaps? All they did was get rid of the claws, and since this is set at a martial arts school in Canada (which is easily one of the five most ridiculous things I've heard this year), who wants to bet a pair of "tiger claw" weapons are going to make an appearance at some point? Why? Can I just ask that? You've got Logan popping up in every comic, the Origins movie coming out in a month or so, the "Wolverine Art Appreciation Month" stuff, and now a manga? Just give him a rest! You know what I'd like to see, instead of all these different schticks? I'd like to see one or two major characters just disappear for like half a year, a la Secret Wars. Can you imagine if Wolverine and Spider-Man just vanished from the major Marvel universe for six months? Hell, they did it with the Hulk, and that worked out great. And don't think this is the end of it, either. There's an X-Men manga coming as well, and unlike "Prodigal Sun", it's gonna be done in shojo style, which is aimed towards teenage girls. Hmm; could we see the mutant version of "Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane"? That could be decent… Click the image below to see a whole lot more: 0 CommentsYou must be a Member to post comment Click here to Login New User? Signup |
