Tyrese Has A Comic Book: 'Mayhem'

By Christopher Brown on 04.17.2009

So, thanks to mi amiga, via Twitter, who brought this to my attention, it seems that Mr. Tyrese Gibson is developing a comic book.

As it turns out, he's a big fan of the comic book/action genre (as proven by his role in Transformers). The question then becomes, WHY?

I've a theory on this, but first, have a look at the promo image:

OK.

With that being said, why is Tyrese creating this?

I'm inclined to believe that he's trying to create a character all his own to later promote as a starring vehicle for none other than…himself! Obviously, with the success of such comic book movies as Wanted, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, etc., he's gunning (pun intended) for a similar character driven storyline that will give him some ammo for the studios.

Fair enough. That's definitely a logical, even admirable approach. But with that being said, let's look at what's going on here on this cover. We've got a vigilante type guy wearing a mask and diving from behind a corner shooting twin Desert Eagles at a target off page. The mask he wears, however, does not cover his ears, which have hoop earrings. He may also suffer from Rob Leifeld disease with the questionable use of pockets on his outfit. The character is also obviously non-Caucasian (most likely African American), yet he has…blue…eyes…? Contacts to throw off the bad guys? Hmmm.

The title, Mayhem, suggests this will be a book of insanity, chaos, and excitement…but this image doesn't exactly inspire those feelings in me. Hopefully when the title is ready to ship, the description will be enough to grab us…and we won't be relying on Tyrese's name being attached to the book to draw us in to this world.
