Mark Millar Will Direct Superhero Movie in 2010!

By Chris Mireles on 11.02.2009

Details are practically non-existent at the moment, but from the words of the man himself, Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass, Chosen) is planning to direct his first feature film. It hardly comes as a surprise to find that it’s going to be a superhero movie. With such a penchant for fresh ideas, this should be something to look forward to.

ComingSoon.net touches on the subject a little and offers up the original post Millar left on his official forum:

Bet you didn’t see THAT coming, laddies and lassies!

But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you’ll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? Well, that’s all a secret for now, but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema. I never want to be a studio bitch and go in there pitching for them to love me. The closest I came to this was a couple of calls regarding Superman, but pretty much none of my plans ever revealed as I didn’t like the idea of anyone nicking them.

Similarly, I don’t like the idea of asking for funding and justifying scenes with the money-men so I’m doing what Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass and just making it outside the system with private investors. The financing is all secured and the movie stands or falls on how good I can make it, doing what Matthew did and just selling it once completed.

As you can imagine, I couldn’t be more excited. More as it happens, but this might just beat out War Heroes and American Jesus as my follow-ups to the Wanted and Kick-Ass movies. Have two other pictures about to go into development (and Wanted and Kick-Ass 2, of course), but I think you need to scare the Hell out of yourself every once in a while and something totally new like directing should do the trick.

Way to go Mark! You show those Hollywood suits who really makes the movies. I hope he does well. I wonder what it’s going to be.

Overrated my ass! Mark Millar is quite possibly one of the most fun and consistently great writers in comics. If his movie is anywhere as fun as his books are, this should be one of the greatest popcorn movies of all time.

I have to agree with Bossanova Sunday on this, sorry Toni. Mark Millar is mediocre at best ... and GODAWEFUL at worste. He has some great concepts but his execution of the concepts is lack-luster. I smell another George Lucas scenerio.

Stick with being an "IDEA MAN" Mark Millar. That and a Jack-Ass ...

Oh sweet lord. They really will let any sell-out direct now eh? Didn't they learn from Frank? Mark is a horrid person and while he has done good stuff his best is far behind him.

pffft. Have any of you read Ultimate Avengers? That is the best comic being written right now, great dialogue, great action, and a cool new take on characters. Mark Millar makes comics the way comics should be made, but if you guys want a bunch of snarky dialogue and lousy action; read Buff Season 8 or whatever shit Whedon is cramming out.

Who said I liked Whedon's Comics? My wife reads Buffy, but I can't get into it. I prefer Brian Wood, Matt Wagner, Darwyn Cooke, Jason Aaron's work on Scalped is incredible! ... and J. Michael Straczynski's work on THOR! Mike Mignola, Grant Morrison ... These Guys Top my list.

Don't worry Fist, I'm not actually accusing anyone of actually reading Buffy; it's just the Whedon style is the direct contrast to the over the top Millar style. My top guys are, Brubaker, Millar, Ennis, Ellis and Azzarello. But I am hella stoked for Jason Aaron's Punisher MAX with the great Steve Dillon.

Whoa now! I like Millar and I'm excited to see what he does, but let's not start attacking Joss and Season 8 of Buffy.

Yes, Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon are going to rule Punisher MAX!

Doesn't mean he should direct. I have read UA and it isn't as good as everyone things. There is much better out there and all stuff we have seen before. My main problem with him is he is vile.

All of Mark Millar's Ultimate work is actually the exact same story over and over. The Ultimates have to hunt down one of their own. Then a threat comes and they all get back together to fight it. Millar is a hack and giving him millions to commit stuff to celluloid could only lead to a what I would consider the equivalent of being caught in a used condom rainstorm... Top Marvel writers right now are no order Bendis Brubaker Hickman Aaron

Call me an old pessimist but I recall a number of years ago when people were having arguments of a similar vein. At that time they were arguing about a comic book artist.

I hear ya Yaguara. So let me put it this way. What Rob Liefeld is to comic book artist, Mark Millar is to comic book writers.

What about Red Son? That was great, C'mon, am I the only Millar fan here?

Fair enough ... I'll give you Red Son. That was an amazing piece of fiction. But (in my opinion) one good work, does not a good writer make.

JMS Thor is a giant sack of steamy dogcrap. It is slow, self-indulgent, and most of all, boring as all hell. Thor should not sit in a chair and brood. That shit is retarded. Just had to throw that out there. And honestly, I would like someone to make a legitimate case against Mark Millar besides "he is crap". He writes over-the-top spectacle, just like Bendis writes engaging character interaction, or Joss Whedon writes masturbatory snark. It's another style of writing. And to say that Ulti
