Judge Dredd Relaunch

By Brian Kronner on 11.24.2009

Why redo a movie that was already perfect? Ok, so Stalone’s JUDGE DREDD fell somewhere short of perfect. In fact it was one of the most panned films of the 90’s. But that’s what the 1990’s were all about, butchering comic book movies. I mean the best comic movie of the 90’s was what? BATMAN RETURNS? When Danny Devito giving an inspirational speech to an army of missile touting penguins is your best movie of the decade, the genre is in trouble. Then you follow that up with movies about little known characters like Dredd, Barb Wire and Tank Girl, and a Fantastic Four movie so bad the producers wouldn’t release it. The 1990’s are the dark ages of comic movies, all topped off by 1997’s BATMAN AND ROBIN, which I consider to be the worst movie ever made.

So now they want to re-launch the JUDGE DREDD line, and I’m all for it. Let’s fix all of them, wipe out the painful memories of Hollywood’s screw ups and give the fanboys something to enjoy… just keep it away from FOX.

This is what Super Hero Hype reported earlier:

Roughly two months ago, it was announced that 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland was tackling the screenplay for another attempt at a Dredd movie for DNA Films, and over the weekend, comic artist Mark Simpson who draws under the pen name "Jock" mentioned the fact that he had a meeting to talk about the Judge Dredd movie on Monday. i.e. today. (Writer Andy Diggle may also be involved with this meeting, although he’s being slightly more coy about it if so.)

Our British readers will realize that Jock drew Judge Dredd in "2000 AD" for a number of years, working with writer Andy Diggle before the two of them kicked off the DC/Vertigo relaunch of The Losers, which some may be aware is being turned into a movie directed by Sylvain White next April.

So, you like or not?

I love The Comics ... if done right ... this would be AWESOME! The old one had the right Lead in Stallone, but the wrong script, director and supporting cast.

As long as Dredd never takes off his helmet.

I haven't seen this film in years, but i do remember NOT hating it. i agree with HeadCase, keep the helmet on at all times. Thats one thing that pissed me off about Raimi's Spiderman flicks. He always had Spidey take his mask off when he didnt need to.

And the other thing that had me shouting at the screen was the stupid flying bike, the Lawmaster never flew in the comics so why piss people off and do it for the film?! To kill off the Angel Gang so easily was a total cop out too. Still, if they can follow the tren and actually do a GOOD version that is not a hollywood makeover where everything changes to please some numpty who's never read Dredd before then i'm ALL for it

I have to admit Im a massive Dredd fan and so the thought of doing it properly really does get me excited. I don't hate the stallone film, it's one of my guilty pleasure films, you know you shouldnt like it but still do lol. Though I agree totally with all of the above...Stallone was great, the jaw, the voice...just not the full face, the helmet should never EVER come off (unless you see him from behind or in shadow so you never see his face like in the comics ha ha)

@ The Dr. : "And I really don't care for the way your company left me in the middle of fucking nowhere with fucking keys to a fucking car that isn't fucking there. And I really didn't care to fucking walk down a fucking highway and across a fucking runway to get back here to have you smile in my fucking face. I want a fucking car RIGHT FUCKING NOW! " Love that movie!

its a movie he has to take off his helmet. This film had great costumes. Dredd's boots rocked. it will take the studios days to get a good script. i think i would prefer a new Dredd. When they write the new one, they should have Bradbury in mind.
