The Avengers: Possible Hawkeye?

By Christopher Brown on 12.03.2009

Jeremy Renner, star of The Hurt Locker, was recently approached for talks to play Hawkeye in The Avengers.

The story broke in Empire magazine, but nothing else had been discussed since. Superherohype.com caught up with Renner after a night at the Independent Film Gotham Awards. Renner states:

"I haven’t heard anything since I talked to
them three weeks ago," he admitted. "The last I knew is that they still
have to find their director for ‘The Avengers,’ that’s where he’s
really going to show up. They were just talking, ‘Like maybe we should
consider maybe hiring Hawkeye now’ but there’s no director on
‘Avengers’ so they don’t really want to force-feed the director,
‘Here’s the whole cast.’ It’s a big role so they didn’t want to do that
to the director, so I think they might wait. I know they’re interested,
I’m interested, so we’ll see if it works out.

"They sold me on the idea, too, because I
love the idea that Hawkeye’s really not a superhero," Jeremy told us.
"He’s just a man with a high skill set, so I can relate to (that). The
Marvel guys are great for how they made Iron Man to be, ‘Oh, that’s
actually plausible’ so I bought it and I love that. They’re really,
really smart guys and I’d love to work for ‘em, and we’ll see if it
works out.

"…it’s going to be modernized, it’s not going
to be the guy with the big purple (mask), it’s not going to be a guy in
tights. It’s going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest. He’s going to
be more modernized and I’m gonna say, ‘A cooler-looking version’ and
not the big weird costume he had on. I don’t think they’re going that
route."

So, while all of this is still early, it is cause for interest. Have any of you seen The Hurt Locker? Is he a good fit for the Avengers’ archer? Sound off below!

man, i was totally hoping for hawkeye. i'm still not too sure how i feel about Renner's 'sunglasses and vest' description, but i also realize how out of place a man wearing purple from head to toe would be in a modern movie setting. if they were to try and do the purple costume, i picture hawkeye's mask being akin to Super Dame Edna. i'm gonn have to wait it out and see. but man, just imagine how awesome the vision would be to see in live action. this gives me hope it might happen!

I literally started bouncing in my seat when I heard this. The Hurt Locker was a great movie and Hawkeye is a great character.

Jeremy Renner's character came off as nihilistic. He is good at what he does, he knows it, is passionate, and is completely sarcastic and arrogant. He would make an excellent Hawkeye. Pick up The Hurt Locker it was a good movie.

To me, it's not AVENGERS without Hawkeye.

Clearly, I am the only one on here who just isn't impressed with Hawkeye. But I was never impressed with the Green Arrow either. I always felt that both characters were just low-rent Batman knock-offs. All that aside I am impressed with Jeremy Renner. I think he will be one to watch in the action-film future.

yaguara ... Batman knock-offs? Hmmm ... I'd say they are very different from the Bats ... They are far more "goodie" ... not that they are moral compasses or anything. I just think Bats goes to lower levels than either of them. They are clearly Robin Hoods.

I'm all about Nathan Fillion as Hawkeye, Hes charismatic but can also be an ass. I think he would be a good fit.

Really Fist? Let's think about this a minute. We have a highly motivated, highly trained guy with no superpowers but a bunch of high-tech gadgets that sets out to fight crime. Tell me which of the three characters I just described. On the one hand we have Bruce Wayne - ultra-wealthy, highly trained and highly motivated crime fighter with no super powers but a ton of high-tech gadgets built around a bat theme. Now we have Olliver Queen - an ultra-wealthy, highly trained and highly motivated

crime fighter with no super powers but a ton of high tech gadgets built around an arrow theme. Then there is Clint Barton - not so wealthy but hihgly trained and highly motivated crime fighter with no super powers but a ton of high tech gadgets built around an arrow theme.

Im pretty sure the picture above is actually of Bullseye (who is currently masquerading as Hawkeye in the comics). Jeremy Renner was fantastic in the Hurt Locker and the "Sunset and Vest" comment means they're def. going the Ultimates route with the upcoming Avengers film. Which means the Hulk is probably going to be the villain...
