Reynolds talks Green Lantern

By Brian Kronner on 12.03.2009

So, we’re headed back to the well again, tapping MTV for comic news.

Our soon to be Hal Jordan had this to say: "I think you walk away from this first film, and the moments that you remember and the moments that mean so much to you, not unlike ‘Iron Man,’ are the moments where the guy’s not in the suit. That to me is the tough thing to get right, and that’s something that they did get right [in ‘Iron Man’]. You see why this guy’s in the suit, and that’s what’s interesting to me. Not that he is in the suit, but why. It is [an origin story] to a certain degree, but it’s not a labored origin story, where the movie [truly] begins in the third act. The movie starts when it starts. We find out Hal is the guy fairly early on, and the adventure begins."

So Reynolds wants you to love Hal Jordan more than Green Lantern is what I’m hearing. I was in the camp who supported his casting as Deadpool, and was all for the rumors of him playing The Flash. But admittedly I wasn’t thrilled with the choice to make him Hal. So if I leave the theater comparing him to Downey in IRON MAN it would have to have been impressive. Here’s to hope my friends.

Sounds to me like what I want to hear from an actor. The actor needs to know they are playing a character not a costume. As much as we associate Hal Jordan with the costume, Hal is the character that we are reading about - not the long green underwear and finger-bling. It is what Hal does in his goofy outfit that makes the story - not the outfit itself. I am one of the minority that believes RR can pull this off and it sure sounds like he's got the right idea.

I'll grant you that we all know RR as the "funny guy" but I have seen flashes that he can do more than that. I saw him in The Proposal (Yes, it is a chick-flick and Yes, I did get "some" because I watched the movie.) and like all chick-flicks it isn't over until somebody cries. That means there has to be drama and there is. In this case the drama comes from RR's relationship with Sandra Bullock's character (romantic drama) and his adversarial relationship with his "father" played by Craig T N

played by Craig T Nelson. He actually does a pretty darn good job. RR is not just a funny guy he can do serious too. I think he'll actually do better as Hal then as Wade because he'll have to work at it. Look at Robin Williams. Everybody, including Robin, thinks he can do funny with his eyes closed - so he doesn't work at it anymore. As a result he isn't funny any more. Robin has to work at his dramatic characters and he is doing a better job with those these days then his funny guy roles

Someone thinks they saw Reynolds playing something other than the exact same moronic humorless loudmouth in a movie? You'll have to prove it to me.

mrpoizun Watch both "Adventureland" and "Amityville Horror" (most recent remake). Reynolds does a very different character for both of those movies. He really shows his talent.
