Spider-Man Movies Get The Reboot

By Brian Kronner on 01.11.2010

Spider-Man 4 is dead and I’m not happy about it.

spider-man

And here is Sony’s press release…

Culver City, CA (January 11, 2010) – Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously
excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

So basically, Raimi wouldn’t bend over and let SONY ruin another chapter, so they canned him. I see no positives here. Instead we get yet another Marvel reboot coming. Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and X-Men are all doing it, why not Spidey? Forget that Spidey was all ready a well established franchise, setting new standards among comic movies, SONY just couldn’t let the
talent do what they were hired for.

The studio interfered with the 3rd movie, and ruined it. Now, instead of letting Raimi do what he was hired for, they want to overkill the movie with multiple villains. Thus proving they learned nothing from the 90’s BATMAN franchise. Don’t over saturate.

spider-man

So now SONY will get some less talented director to come in and bend to their will and we’ll get something even worse than SPIDERMAN 3, we’ll get SPIDERMAN AND ROBIN.

I know a lot of people will be happy with this given the results of SPIDERMAN 3 and the hate for Tobey, but I really don’t like this…

Deadline.com had this to say:

Immediately, the news brought celebration and consternation equally to webslinger fanboys who say the reboot plot puts Peter Parker back in high school. There’s also much unconfirmed speculation that this new franchise will be in 3D. And the fans also recall that, in 1991, James Cameron wrote a treatment for Spider-Man and now they’re wondering if he might helm the reboot. (Sony ended up acquiring his treatment in a legal settlement.)

Here’s what went down: My sources tell me that Raimi told Sony Pictures: "I can’t make your date. I can’t go forward creatively." And, so, once he said "That’s it", Sony Pictures co-chairman Pascal and Columbia Pictures’ Matt Tolmach decided they didn’t want to replace him and instead chose to reboot the franchise. Insiders also tell me that Tobey Maguire heard the news in a phone call with Amy today. I’m told Tobey wasn’t upset. "He’s made 3 great Spider-Man movies. He’s done really well. But he’s the kind of guy who, if Sam wanted to go forward, would have been there for Sam and the studio. Absolutely."

bruce campbell

My biggest regret is though, no more major role for Bruce Campbell.

This reboot could be the best thing ever for the next movie... it kinda has to, otherwise is like willingly paying current full price for a Batman Forever screening...
Money-wise?, Sony doesn't need to worry AT ALL. People will watch whatever you throw at them at this point, as long as you paste the Spiderman and the Marvel logo, and that's THANKS to Raimi's first two installments, SM3 is the proof that they'll do.

Raimi proved with DRAG ME TO HELL, when not handcuffed by the studio, he's still got it. I blame the studio for the 3rd movie and I think this situation is gonna be bad.

I for one am taking this as a breathe of fresh air. Like I stated in the last Spidey post, I think this is what Spider-man needs. A fresh start. I think not having Raimi, Toby and Dunst is a good thing. Although there is a possibility that this could end up in disaster, I remain optimistic.

Thank god. Maguire nailed the quirky geek, but was never a satisfying Spider-Man. And Kirsten Dunst is a fugly troll. This is exactly what this franchise needed.

This is great: as much as I love Army of Darkness, Raimi's Spider-Man films sucked ass. Peter Parker should never be such a fucking pussy, and he needs some goddamn web shooters. Restart it, and do it right for fuck's sake. Establish a Gwen-Peter-MJ love triangle, and throw in a ton of quippy humor.

I'm just happy I don't have to see Tobey Maguire or Kirsten Dunst ruin yet another spider-man movie. At least this way when I go see it...it will be a surprise.

Yeah, I'm in agreement that we could use a new peter and MJ. I'm not entirely dissapointed, because I noted "[T]he new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise [will be] produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios...", which is reassuring. I've come to accept these reboots as an inevitable part of comics. At least a reboot allows them to right some wrongs done in the previous films. Someone should reboot Star Wars, and re-do Episode 1.

I am not pleased about this for the simple reason that I am tired of watching the same damn story over and over. So you want to get rid of Raimi, Toby, and Dunst? Fine, go ahead and get rid of them but please don't waste my time with another rehashing of the origin story again. Tell me a new story with new actors. I can suspend my disbeleif with a new face for Peter Parker and MJ from the very beginning. I don't need another whole damn movie to accept a new actor in the role.

There is NO need to reboot. Let's move forward. We all know how he became Spider-Man, his arch-enemy is Green Goblin who is really his best friend’s dad and that Harry also become The Green Goblin. We don't need to see it again.

I'm fine with a re-boot ... have to agree with yaguara ... don't do Spidey's origin again. Make it the credits if you feel you have to, but don't waste even five minutes of the movie on it. I didn't mind the old cast at all. They worked fine for me ... but then I don't read Spidey religiously either. There is a post on /film about how it is going to be "Gritty and Contemporary" ... and that the script is finished.

Gritty my ass. They are moving him back to High School for the sole reason of attracting a younger audience and trying to tap into the regrettably, market controlling teens. Yet another far reaching evil done by TWILIGHT...

Here's the link to the /film page.

It's written by James Vanderbilt.

i would have to agree with the Dr. here. this is most likely going to be a really bad move. Unless of course Cameron shows interest in helming his draft that he pitched in the 90's. Then it would be great. But that probably NOT going to happen. ALSO, Fisticufflinks. I hope you realize, that this reboot will probably be shot for 3D, where as Raimi has openly claimed he wouldnt shoot for 3D. Just an FYI!

I hate 3-D ... I'm fine with the "idea" of the reboot. I'm not sure it's in good hands. I'm a fan of Raimi ... always will be. I don't want a "Gritty or Contemporary" Spidey. ...and I really don't want a "Spilight" movie. But I am fine with the "idea" of a reboot.

lets look at it this way, maybe the new Spidey will be like Batman Begins to Batman forever. I'm so not comparing Spidey to Bat nipples but I'm just hoping for the same leap.

I'v been a long time fan of this site. been coming here every couple of days for over a year now and I finally created an account. Just had to voice my disagreement about the new Spider-man reboot. While there is less than no info on the new direction, I am hoping its a step in the right direction. Like Marvel was able to do with their Ultimate Series, I think this too will come out better than expected.

Kilcal, first off welcome aboard. Second, I was totally thinking Ultimate Spiderman and that is what makes me excited about the Reboot.

It is basically the worst part of Spiderman 3, and that is what makes it so awesome. I used it to represent my joy of hearing about the reboot.

I think if I had the power of Spider-Man, augmented by the alien costume, I'd be dancing down the street too.

not so great but then Salvation brought us back to the tone of the first two movies (yes the script and ending could have used more work but that's why I said "tone" of the movie :P).

I visit this site daily and also just made an account to comment here :P While I am a big fan of Ultimate Spiderman, I have to say that I wouldn't really enjoy seeing it in a reboot ... right now. Yes it might be great some more years down the line, but it's too soon to be retelling the origins again. I think the movies should just continue where they left off, and try to just bring their established universe back on track. I guess the best analogy I can make is like how Terminator 3 was

Terminator Salvation was a sequel and a prequel wrapped in one. That is what was so good about it. I enjoyed T4 and am looking forward to a T5. Anyone who just signed up, you should head over to the Conan cover battle and throw down your choices.

I'm fine with a reboot that takes us back to Peter in high school, but I also really don't want to sit through another hour of Peter Parker the movie; I understand the concept of his life before the spider bite, but I don't want to have to watch it again. I think having it in the credits is a fine idea; as long as Spidey's already in the suit and Uncle Ben is dead by the time the movie actually starts. Hell, if I were making it the first scene in the movie would be Spidey stopping Rhino from b

what id like to see is them jump straight in to the lab where he gets bitten and maybe even a montage of him figuring out his powers and building the web shooters where and how he gets the tights y'know seeing as how all of that was left out in the previous attempt at the flicks not to mention the one thing he does best fighting crime and spouting hilarious wise cracks y'know a great adaptation

I am happy about the reboot. I am hoping it is based on the Ultimate Spider-Man series. It is pretty gritty without being too dark.

Venom
Well they did a good job with the new hulk. They just had like flash backs maybe they can do something like that. They need to put the characers in the movie with out just throughing them in to suit their needs like edie brock gewn and so forth.

Venom
I am not a fan of the ultimate spiderman. I didnt like what the did with the green goblin. What they should do is maybe do doc octopus as the first vilain. I bleive he was one of the first vilains. Have Gwen and petter in it and then have mj in the mix. The next one have the green goblin kill off gwen and have the syboit atach itself to spiderman and at the end he loses it and kills the goblin and hes like what have I done. He loses the suit. Spiderman 3 bring venom. Or if they do it right witc
