The AVATAR Effect

By Brian Kronner on 01.26.2010

Wow, AVATAR’s reach is all encompassing. Cameron’s Stereoscopic 3D technology is taking over Hollywood one movie at a time, and may even delay CLASH OF THE TITANS if they decide to convert that to the 3D format as well.

MARKET SAW reported here and here, that GHOSTBUSTERS 3, as well as a new GREMLINS movie will both use the stereoscopic 3D technology we saw in AVATAR.

The long awaited GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is finally starting to movie forward it seems and the inclusion of 3D technology sure insure an appearance from Slimer flying at the screen…

Furthermore it seems like original
GREMLINS Director Joe Dante will return as well.  I’m good with this as Dante directed not only both previous Gremlin movies, but one of my all time favorites as well, THE ‘BURBS.

And the PLANET OF THE APES thing, let
me start by saying that AVATAR was visually the most stunning movie I’ve ever seen, and I was super pumped going in cause I love Cameron. But the story just seems tired to me…

Anyhow, the success of the movie proved
that visuals have again trumped over story. Now we’re gonna get yet another version of my beloved PLANET OF THE APES. Now I like Marky-Mark and Tim Roth, but the Burton movie just pissed me off.  The ending was stupid as it made no sense, all the apes had Super-Jumping ability
(I guess Ratner watched this right before he did X3) and the fact that he made Helena Bonham Carter look just like Michael Jackson, it was all just too much.

So here’s to hoping they don’t screw things up too bad this time around.

If Bill Murray returns as Peter Vankman,
Gizmo goes Rambo on Spike again, and we get the real ‘Statue of Liberty’  scene in APES, then who knows, this could all turn out for the best. But I doubt it.

on another note, I'll leave the status of my new avatar to Brian Kronner. If it's too much for BK. I'll take her down.

hahaha the Michael Jackson picture is funny! I liked the remake of Planet of the Apes to an extent. It was good for one or two watches but I'm totally up for seeing a proper movie made. Something to make up for the ending in the remake. bleh. that ending really did suck.

I don't know who Munkrawk is but I will honestly say I disagree with your comment about the ending of the remake of Planet of the Apes. With everything considered, the ending worked out extremely well and tied the story off nicely. It wasn't over the top and with the changes that were made, it made sense to end on that intentional, bizarre note.

Movies in 3D are WRONG. If you watch a movie in 3D you might as well masturbate inside your bible.

Any movie that's in 3D is a movie that's not only a waste of time, but a waste of money too. No where in the history of cinema, not counting the last decade, did a director even consider making a film in 3D. It takes away from the movie and doesn't even really work right.

Uh, actually movies have been using 3D technology since the 1950s... Also, if the end of Burton's PLANET OF THE APES made sense please explain it to me, cause I'm apparently retarded.

"I think the message to, uh.. psychos, fanatics, murderers, nutcases all over the world is, uh, "do not mess with suburbanites". Because, uh, frankly we're just not gonna take it any more!" Dr. K. also one of my favorite movies!

A thermostat on a home furnace; is that supposed to go to 5,000 degrees, you think?

Movies in 3D is just a gimmick to dupe the public into coming back to the theater. Cinema is floundering. Streaming media has already all but dominated how we see rentals. It is quickly becoming an affordable alternative to cable and satellite service, especially since there is hardly ever anything worth watching on either. Add to that the number of torrent and bootleg movie sites feeding us with a steady stream of new releases and you wind up with an inevitable truth. We want our pretty pic

One thing to say! NO SHIT AVATAR BEAT THE DARK KNIGHT! Tickets are twice the price. I paid 18 to see it. 9 to see Dark Knight. We should stop looking at money and looking at amount of tickets sold. As for 3D...there is a crap ton of movies i would love for them to go back and do in 3D. Especially Camerons new tech.
