The Chloe Sullivan Project
By Steve Sanchez
on 04.14.2010
I’ve got something for all of you Smallville fans out there, particularly those who appreciate the character of Chloe Sullivan and the acting talents of Allison Mack. A group has made a commercial to commemorate and honor Chloe and Allison Mack. Here is their press release: "Fans honor CW leading lady & Smallville star, Allison Mack, with tribute commercial to air in Los Angeles.
Smallville fans have funded a professionally-filmed tribute commercial for the CW leading lady Allison Mack and her TV character, Chloe Sullivan, to air this Spring in Los Angeles before this season concludes. Starring on Smallville since 2001, Ms. Mack has gained a large and devoted fan base as one of the CW’s most beloved stars. For the completion of her 9th year on the series, Smallville fans decided to celebrate Allison Mack and her TV character, Chloe Sullivan, with a commercial project entitled Legendary. Scripted and funded entirely by fans, this first of its kind tribute ad was filmed in Los Angeles in late February. In the capable hands of the director, Jon Michael Kondrath, cast and crew created a tribute ad focusing on who Chloe Sullivan is and what she means to Smallville fans. The ad highlights milestones in Chloe Sullivan’s journey from her introduction as a high school student in Smallville to being hired at the Daily Planet as well as becoming Clark Kent’s confidante. “ The website, Legendary (http://www.legendarychloe.com), has been set up for the project. Although the initial goals of the project have been met, the organizers invite other Smallville fans to help them expand the project with longer air time for the ad or airing it in a second TV market. Ms. Mack has been the center of a flurry of fan activity recently. Earlier this year, Smallville fans participated in Operation: Truth & Justice, another initiative to honor Ms. Mack, in which fans donated $3000 to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation in her name and sent the CW star baskets of fan created gifts in appreciation of her performance." Now, personally I think this is super cool for fans to be this devoted to a T.V. show character and it takes it to a whole new level when they are the ones actually paying for it. I don’t know if it has ever happened before but I’ve never seen a level of devotion like that. Where’s the Jack Bauer fan commercial?! Or a John Locke fan commercial?! I think everyone involved in this project deserves a pat on the back for their dedication to not only Chloe and Allison but to the Smallville show as a whole. I’ve not watched the second half of the current Smallville season, but I have watched everything before that and loved the majority of it. I have to admit I almost couldn’t stand Chloe in the first season and a half, but she eventually grew on me. The character has gone through so many changes over the many years and episodes.
Season 1 she was the nerdy student in charge of the high school newspaper and had the secret (sometimes not so secret) crush on Clark which kind of carried over into season 2, but at the end of season 2 Chloe sort of turns to the dark side with her agreement with Lionel Luthor to investigate Clark. This leaves you wondering going into Season 3 whether or not Chloe will turn on Clark.
Chloe returns in season 3 (with a pretty bad hair do) still seemingly helping Clark and stalling on her investigating for Luthor. By the end her and Clark’s friendship is strained but she gave Luthor practically nothing on her secret crush. But then she apparently dies! But it’s all good in season 4 because “gasp” she was alive. I don’t remember even entertaining the thought she was toast. Season 4 is actually a big turning point for Chloe’s character because she starts suspecting something about Clark is different, and after witnessing a spectacular car catch she knows without a doubt that Clark is not just a farm boy. Throughout the season she waits for Clark to tell her of his own free will instead of her telling him she knows.
By the start of the fifth season the cat is outta the bag whether Clark wants it or not because Chloe got a one way ticket to the arctic along with our young Superman. I loved the new dynamic between Clark and Chloe from this point on. Not because Chloe has joined the long list of “I know Clark has super powers” people, but because now there is a deep bond of trust between them. And finally because we had all been waiting for it at one point or another, Chloe plants a nice long one on Clarkster’s lips. Sure it was a kiss because Zod was about to kill all of humanity but it was nice to see Chloe finally get something she wanted for a very long time.
In season six Chloe is fulfilling her role to Clark as Oracle would to Batman, and she fully does as “Watchtower” in the awesome Justice episode. This also introduces Jimmy Olsen into the mix to try and get away from the whole Chloe/Clark thing. And what happens at the end of the season? Chloe seemingly dies…. Again. But once more she is alive and well in season 7, from her new “meteor” powers! Through season 7 she also gains a nifty Braniac ability.
Season 8 is what I like to call the Chloe-Jimmy-Bloome twisted love triangle. With Chloe agreeing to marry Jimmy and Davis Bloome aka Doomsday constantly stalking the poor gal it made for a pretty wild ride. In the end it’s tragedy all around with nutter Davis killing Jimmy, and before dying Jimmy slays that crazy turd for good. In the end I don’t want Chloe to die (permanently at least), but rumors are definitely swirling with talk of that. I think she has been a valuable part of the show for the last nine seasons and I hope she makes it into the tenth and possibly final one. Rock on Watchtower. 9 Comments
