THOR Update

By Brian Kronner on 01.11.2010

With yesterday’s announcement that SPIDER-MAN 4 will not start production in time for its planned May 5, 2011 release, other studios are looking to grab some of those dates for their own tentpoles. Making that rumored delay official is the news that Marvel Studios and Paramount will be releasing Kenneth Branagh’s THOR on Spider-Man’s original release weekend, kicking off the summer on May 6, two weeks earlier than its original release plan.

According to Variety, Sony hasn’t abandoned the date yet and still hopes to get Spider-Man 4 done in time, but Paramount has decided to not wait and see what Sony does before grabbing that date themselves. They suggest that if Sony decides to keep that date then Thor will move again, although it’s doubtful they can get May 20 back again.

At this point, Sony hasn’t announced a new release date for Spider-Man 4. July 4th that year has been held for Michael Bay’s Transformers 3 followed two weeks later by the "Harry Potter" finale and then The First Avenger: Captain America, which hasn’t even announced its cast yet, the following week. (Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern has already grabbed June 17, potentially making it one of the busiest summers for comic book and superhero movies in some time.) In related news, CineFOOLS reports that Thor will start filming this Friday.

Have to admit, I’m way more excited for THOR than Spidey 4, so this is all good news to me.

FUCK YEAH! New casting news today as well. Stewart Townsend is out! Joe Nobody is in and I think He will be far better than the STEW!

Am I the only one who doesn't think this movie is going to be a slam dunk? It looks like Brannagh is going to make this into a character piece when it should be an adventure flick. If you try to make something like Thor to be enjoyable to more "legitimate" movie goers, it's going to end up absurd.

What I'm trying to say is we shouldn't be counting our chickens before they hatch: I have a real bad feeling that Thor will be more akin to Superman Returns than Conan the Barbarian.

Ranger 6, since you know what Thor represents trip on this: Brannagh wants Thor to be sort of a Norse version of Der Himmel über Berlin, also known as Wings of Desire in English markets. Said film was remade by an American studio and called City of Angels, it starred Meg Ryan and featured the worst Goo Goo Dolls song ever, which is like trying to pick which time you were molested sucked the most.

What you are overlooking, Toni Smith, is that you aren't the only person watching the film. I like Superman Returns more than Conan the Barbarian. Conan is AWESOME! But Conan the Barbarian isn't even a decent version of what Conan should have been. The Best Barbarian picture ever done is "Fire and Ice". ...And it's an animated film. But That's just my two cents and what do I know? Right?

Fire & Ice? Seriously or is that a joke? Geez, Fist, tell me you're joking. You're not!?! That's it! You're off the Christmas card list.

Well ... I might be in the minority "here" but more that doesn't put me in the minority altogether. I will give you my reasons for thinking that Thor will be an incredible movie ... but I've never said it will be a "hit". I in fact highly doubt that it will even be as popular as Ang Lee's Hulk was. But I believe in the cast and crew that are on board and I believe in the Director. I know he makes movies that I personally enjoy. That's really all. I know others feel the same way.

... and yaguara, yes ... FIRE AND ICE is easily my favourite Barbarian-Tit film of all time! I don't mind repeating it over and over ... I will take not being on another Christmas list anyway. I celebrate Giftmas. Not into Christmas.

Even if you enjoy Superman Returns, that pus you in the minority here Fist, and still no one has said why they think Thor for some reason will be an incredible hit before they've seen any footage.

Not for me, it isn't. I like it. But would easily rather watch Superman Returns than Conan. Conan hasn't ever been done justice. The Govenator isn't a very good Conan. (I KNOW ... SACRILEGE!! ... right?)

Conan is WAY more enjoyable than Superman Returns.

I don't think it is going to be a totally amped up balls out action/adventure flick. But I personally (and know others that would whole heartedly agree with me) am not looking for a mindless movie in Thor. I'm looking for something far more moody and deep than that. I want action and adventure ... for sure ... but I'm hoping for more. ...and I think that KB will bring that to the table in piles. I could be wrong ... if so, I'll eat my words.

penultimate Conan film - it is just the best of the bunch that has been done to date. This is one property that I would like to see a reboot of. Now if they can just find a guy with Arnie's size and who can act, a script writer who follows the material, and some proper fight choreography.

Actually, I would like to see a Thor movie along similiar lines to what Fist wants and I think it will be a good film for many of the same reasons. I like the director and some of the actors. I am not emotionally invested in Thor so I am not as excited as many on the list and I also think that some of people's excitement on the list is a little premature. Conan is a better movie to me then Superman Returns but Arnie is not the best Conan there could have been and the film is not the penultima

"Arnie is not the best Conan" LIES! Arnold is the best EVERYTHING!!!

Thor is the Norse God of Thunder, and he smashes things with his giant magic hammer. This will be awesome.

Wanting Thor to be dark and moody is like wanting a Sandman movie to be a balls-out action blowout. In other words, it's completely missing the point. Jorn has it right: Thor needs to hit things, and if he doesn't hit a sufficient number of things, then this will suck.
