Why Fanboys Should Never be Casting Directors

By Toni Smith on 03.10.2010

Let’s just stop kidding ourselves at this point: Zac Efron should be Spider-Man, he’s a fantastic actor and his musical background makes him a more athleticly fit and more adept for fight choreography (don’t believe me, boxers have been training with ballet instructors since the 70’s). Society as of late has branded musicals as “faggy” and scoff at the notion of talent stemming from them. Well here are two examples to the contrary, the first is from “Singin’ In The Rain,” bear in mind Donald O’Connor performed his on his own without any special harnesses or doubles, and the second features a familiar face to anyone who claims to be a man:

Yes, that’s Clint Eastwood singing a love song, to fucking trees, and that does not make him less of a man.

Just because an actor has a few roles in his resume“ that you might not agree with does not make he or she a blight on society. Efron may be a tween heartthrob, but that shouldn’t blacklist him forever: actors have to start somewhere, and the good ones branch out.  If you were running a law firm, would you pass on one of the best litigators in the state because he or she worked at McDonald’s when they were in high school?  Not every actor can make their start with the roles that you would want to see them in, and what you would deem acceptable can be completely different than the guy next to you. I for one, fucking hate the show Firefly, and I know that having a piece on a comics site puts me in the minority, but I don’t bemoan Alan Tudyk for being on the show, nor Mirrormask, which was terrible; I still think the guy is a great actor. I hate Firefly, but I don’t scoff at the actors on that show for being on it, since it launched many actors careers, including the kid who played a young Simon Tam in episode 5, that kid who made his professional acting debut in that role: Zac Efron.

What’s worse about chastising an actor for where they got their start is that it creates a divisive mentality. Refusal of another strictly for their history creates a myopia that limits the creative spectrum. This is a common occurrence in the comics scene.  Comic Fans tend to believe that their “Actors” belong to them and are only fit for the movies that relate t the comics scene. That’s why Nathan Fillon’s name pops up all the time in “Who should Play. . .” games; I’ve even seen some posts where a fan will try to say that “nerds” have a different dream girl than other people. Let’s get something straight, most heterosexual dicks work the same: if a guy finds Megan Fox hot, odds are he sees Eliza Dushku super hot as well. Problem is; many hardcore fans don’t work in their dream roles; Huh? Let me explain; How stoked would you be to know that the guy cast as one of your favorite superheroes ha to have the tattoo of the very same superhero covered so he could play that role? Would you love to see an actor who grew up reading a certain comic book who would later go on to write an introduction to a collected volume of that hero? Both of those sound like they would make great casting choices, but both of those scenarios are real:

Let’s travel back to July of 2006; a certain casting announcement was made that many comics fans were none to pleased about: Here’s a few links showing some disdain in the comments thread:

AICN

And an artist’s rendering:

Had the studios listened to the fans we would have never seen this:

ledger joker

Sometimes the best possible choice is the last one you would have thought of. Is a tween heartthrob the best choice for say, Captain America, no fucking way, that’s still a manly ass role. Is that singing and dancing heartthrob a great choice for Spider-Man, hells yes, I may not like where Efron got his start, but I can see a promising future. Remember, the man, Clint Eastwood didn’t become the badass to end all badasses right from the start, Fistful of Dollars was made when he was 34. I’ll be the first to concur that Efron will never be an Eastwood, nor a Ledger, but he’d make a great Parker.

Based on the trailer for Iron Man 2, if Robert Downey Jr. walked into most of these fanboys' homes, unzipped and said, "Start sucking," they would do it, gladly. And this is a guy who was Charlie Chaplin, the weird guy from Back to School, the gay drug addict in Less Than Zero, and Ally McBeal's boyfriend. It's called ACTING!

Wow, missing the point at Olympic level - impressive. Try thinking of it this way: actors have to work to make money, they can't wait around for the dream part to fall into their lap. I'm not a fan of Zac Effron but I'm not going to rag on him for getting work. And before you ask, yes I like Firefly. But I also like musicals. And No Retreat No Surrender. People like stuff, deal with it.

Ok Toni, a few things. FIREFLY was fucking excellent. You can't compare that with HSM or I'll vomit everywhere. Next, musicals are not NOW being veiwed as fruity, they always have been. That is why Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood took so much crap for PAINT YOUR WAGON. And Zac Effron sucks a fat one.

Musicals were once considered the pinnacle of the entertainment industry, Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood were grilled because they released Wagon in '69 around the time when R rated movies became prevalent and movies started to take a "Dark and gritty" tone. That and the fact they decide to both be with the chick in that. And Firefly does blow balls way worse than Efron, I'm sick of the Whedon model of having all these snarky ass characters in fantastic locales, it's like Kevin Smith fucked a sci

WHY FANBOYS SHOULD NEVER BE CASTING DIRECTORS ... that was the title of the article? Correct? Because, all I got out of it was that you are a Zac Efron fan. (possibly even "FANBOY") ... I too like the F-RON! ... but I think that your articles headline isn't relevant to the actual article. It's kind of just all over the place and doesn't make any bold statement. sorry, man. not gettin' it.

Toni, Musicals were never considered the 'pinnacle' by the public, only the academy. The big musicals are actually credited with starting what is considered 'The Director's Era' in Hollywood, as the big production musicals kept bombing and bankrupted half the studios in town. When guys like Scorsese and Coppola came along with their relativity cheap made gritty films it saved Hollywood. All starting with BONNIE AND CLYDE in 1969.

Exactly Fist. I mean, isn't Effron THE Fanboy choice? Outside of Kronner all I've seen on here is PRO-ZAC E.

Christian Bale did a musical when he was younger too and you need both you hands and feet to count the bad ass roles he's played. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Effron can be the best choice to be spider-man but I'm not basing that on parts he's done before.

I agree with fist. The title of this article was intriguing, but the article itself is weak. This is like that youtube guy who was crying about how everybody should leave Britney alone. Way to root for your preference while explaining, as scientifically as you know best, why everyone else's preferences suck. Oh and Queen... there's no shame in loving No Retreat No Surrender.

I think the better question would be who HASN'T seen NO RETREAT NO SURRENDER. (I worked at a video store for 5 years, I've seen everything...)

cZa - You've seen No Retreat No Surrender? And like it? If the answers to these questions are yes, YOU ROCK! But have you seen NRNS 2 & 3? Or King of the Kickboxers?

Except Taylor Lautner has no potential because he cannot act.

I'll be the first to admit I should've changed the title; I originally was going to make a point about how Taylor Lautner has some potential, but then I realized I'd have to watch Twilight to back my claims. And I don't want to bash anyone or say that anyone's a retard. All I'm saying is you gotta be Rowdy Yates ir a newsie before Dirty Harry and Batman.

Because I watched those shitty TWILIGHT movies with my girlfriend and I witnessed his shittiness firsthand.

How do you know Norman? I've seen him do two things, Shark Boy and Lava Girl and his SNL Opener. What the fuck else has he done besides Twilight? All I really know about the guy is that he's a remarkable Martial Artist and that has potential for something.

OMG haven't we beaten this F-RON shit to death? aint' no way in hell i will support that POS without him doin' some work. bale did all kinds of shit before he started getting badass rolls, i mean he was in that POS movie with dragons and whatnot, oh and anudder thing, i aint' even sure if F-RON was the lead in the HSM movies, bale was the lead in newsies. that fucker needs to work before he lands a big ass role like spiderman.

So, since when is Spider-Man a manly icon of badassery? I looked at the picture and thought: "Yup, thats a young Peter Parker!" Maguire never got the Parker-dorkiness right and the mouth of Spider-Man wasn't even in the script. Honestly I don't think this Efron guy can pull it off but he has the looks.
